5.0 out of 5 stars MUY BIEN, SENOR AUBELE!!! May 5 2004
By D. Lee
Format:Audio CD
Not a big of latin music or even latin singers, but of late I've developed an affinity for both, especially this new one from Federico Aubele who stems from the beautiful country of Argentina and is doin' his thang on the ESL record label (Thievery Corporation, Blue States, Desmond Williams, Les Hommes). Aubele shines on his debut "Gran Hotel Buenos Aires" with some very familiar, yet unique downtempo. It's unique because the handsome, young artist utilizes styles of dub, folk, ambient and triphop, and pulls it all together with his wonderful Latin guitar. And the vocals are wonderful even if I don't understand what's being sung--but at least are provided the lyrics to be deciphered by your Spanish speaking friends--that is if you have any. At any rate, If you're into Thievery Corporation, Santana, Suba or even Bebel Giberto, check out Federico Aubele! The guy's pretty dawg-gone BIEN!

4.0 out of 5 stars hypnotic music July 4 2004
Format:Audio CD
Federico Aubele's album on ESL comes as a refreshing twist in the downtempo/international music scene. Taking guitar-rich songs from his native Argentina, packing them onto the thievery-built sonic cruiser and stopping off in Kingston to drench it all in dub.
There are plenty of dub records out there, and plenty more from Argentina, but this may be worth your time if you dig mellow, haunting downtempo songs with both live and sampled vocals. Good music for chillin'.
The one drawback, I guess, is that this music can seem too-much like wallpaper or fashion music. But taken as part of a deep collection of music or for inclusion in mixes - I'd say this record rates as a classic of its genre. B+

4.0 out of 5 stars Brazilian trip-hop chillout dub?!?! March 3 2004
By skytwo
Format:Audio CD
I certainly haven't heard anything like this before, but after seeing a positive review by Manhattan's wonderful "Other Music" and hearing some sample tracks, I quickly made the decision to invest in this album.
And what a gem it turned out to be. Twelve rock-solid tracks of sensual, low-key music that combines a Brazilian-flavored guitar sound with warm Portuguese female vocalists-- all set to a Thievery Corporation-esque dub sound. Tremendous, and never forced or awkward. I'm not much of a fan of Latin music, but this is immediately accessible and very rewarding.
As much as I enjoy listening to it on my own, I suspect it'll be something I reach for when I'm with lady friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars BLOW UP YOUR BRAINS!! March 23 2004
Format:Audio CD
i'll say this once-if there is anyone on the planet who could truthfully say they don't like this album, that person would definetly be out of his or her gourd. i FINALLY received my copy after waiting 16 days and let me tell you so far i've only listened to the first four tracks, but can honestly say this cd will be one of my faves for the rest of my life. i knew right off from the real samples that this disk bumped, and when i got it, i was not disappointed... aubele is an amazing musician + co. production-the set is silky smooth, dubbed out, and lays the bass on thick with stylish beats to make ya freak.
GET THIS CD IF YOU HAVE EARS TO HEAR!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars GOOD CD BUT OVER PRODUCED July 9 2004
Format:Audio CD
The Thievery Corp guys try to steal the album from Federico Aubele whom when left alone to play the guitar is spectacular.
All he songs start off the same and it becomes boring after the second cut, too much going on most of the songs, I bought this cd after listening to Los Amigos Invisibles produced by M.A.W. and was really looking forward to a Thievery produced cd.
I BEEN ROBBED.

5.0 out of 5 stars Check out this CD June 29 2004
Format:Audio CD
I first heard of Federico on the latest ESL compilation Den of Thieves. I loved the track "Postales" by him so I picked up this cd. I was amazed; his tracks really get your attention. It's a mix of groovy guitar, sensuous lyrics, and mellow drums. This cd is at its climax when they throw in a trumpet as well. I strongly believe that fans of most genres will enjoy this cd.
