Product Description

From Amazon.com

Once a roving maverick who skipped from euphoric rave to speed-metal to ambient soundscaping as if just to prove he could, recent years have seen Richard Melville Hall relax into a comfortable--and yes, lucrative--niche. On the surface, Hotel follows a similarly laid-back trajectory to his last two albums, Play and 18; melancholic torch-songs indebted to electro-pop, gospel, and David Bowie's "Heroes." That vibe is typified on Hotel by the rousing, keyboard-drenched likes of "Beautiful" and the twinkling, optimistic "Spiders," but that's not to say Moby is stagnating, exactly. For one, he's bravely jettisoned the vocal samples that powered the likes of "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?" and relies instead on his own understated, faintly awestruck vocals--and, indeed, those of guest vocalist Laura Brown, whose sparse, synth-and-drum-machine cover of New Order's "Temptation" is a low-key highlight. But there's also a return to his raving roots on the pulsing, diva-led "Very," and a touch of politics on "Lift Me Up"--a song that hides its contempt for the Bush Administration amid a dark carnival of sweeping strings and disco-noir rhythms. --Louis Pattison

moby discovered Dec 28 2005
Format:Audio CD
as a former announcer and d j for an alternative station in canada some twenty years ago i loved and still love electronics done properly and reverently. this record is that. the lyrical tones and message of men without hats blended on a level i have often imagined. i think eno would be proud as would moog and planck and bowie an even the stranglers.

Excellent Album... April 5 2005
Format:Audio CD
Moby's voice, and the lack of sampling seems to be getting the brunt of criticism for this album. I for one think this album is an excellent follow up to play and 18. If Moby had continued to use sampled sounds, I at this point would begin to feel it as too much a formula for him, instead he puts his own voice into his work much more then before - and while vocally he may not be the strongest he provides an insightful soul to the songs. You don't need to be a top notch signer you really just need to know what you're doing, (think of radiohead - very poor vocally but great) and Moby uses his own vocal range to establish the mood of the album.

The safe route Mar 31 2005
Format:Audio CD
Unfortunately, Moby has gone the safe route on this one. No samples to be found anywhere. Doesn't appear to be a challenging album for him to produce at all - seems like he is happy heading towards the MOR direction - adult radio is where he will stay.

CD2 - Ambient - is the better of the two. I presume that Moby is a fan of Brian Eno after listening to it.

The female vocals on CD1 are the best vocal tracks - Laura Dawn should of sung all of the songs. The version of 'Temptation' is a good take - not as slow but similar to Tori Amos' 'smells like teen spirit'.

overall, not bad - not great - very safe - will be forgotten soon - won't stand out in the Moby backcatalogue.
