This sophomore album by Michelle Branch is amazing. I believe that she has matured so much and experienced the world a little more. This clearly shows up in this album. I'll go ahead and include my own brief critiques on each of her songs:

1. intro
This is just a short clip of some instrumental film music and the CD closes similarly. It's a clever idea, kind of like this CD is Michelle's own movie.

2. are you happy now?
I'm sure everybody has heard this newly released single alteast once. If not, this song seems to "rock on" a little more. The lyrics are definately more mature and I love her attitude while she sings this.

3. find your way back home
This is another upbeat song by Michelle. The lyrics seem to reflect on her life.

4. empty handed
I love how Michelle has so much attitute in a lot of her songs. This is yet another one.

5. tuesday morning
This is one of my favorite songs on the album. I'll admit that I was left speechless the first time I listened to it.

6. one of these days
This is another emotional song by Michelle. As much as I love her voice and the lyrics, the piano playing in the background makes this song seem a little overdone.

7. love me like that (with sheryl crow)
This is kind of a fun song to listen to. Michelle and Sheryl sound great together. I'm not really a Sheryl Crow fan but she's suited perfectly with this song.

8. desprately
Clearly, this song expresses how much Michelle's voice has matured.

9. breath
This song sounds like it could be another single. The stlye is a litte more "popish" but it's extremely catchy.

10. where are you now?
I love the guitar progression at the beginning of this song. Overall, it's also a "popish" song. This could be another one of her singles.

11. hotel paper
Hotel Paper is my favorite song on this album. If you like how beautiful "Goodbye to you" from Spirit Room is, then you'll definately fall in love with this song. Michelle's emotions are deeply expressed through the song. It's an excellent stress reliever too!

12. 'til i get over you
I absolutely love the french lyrics in the background. It adds a wonderful touch to this song.

13. it's you
I wish this song was longer, it's so pretty. I guess this is a bonus track because the lyrics are not included. Anyway, this last track ends this album with some more film music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Successful Sophomore... Jun 27 2003
Format:Audio CD
Since I first discovered Michelle Branch last year (like many others), her debut cd THE SPIRIT ROOM has been a staple in my cd changer. It's fun, light folk pop with a dose of rock and very enjoyable from top to bottom. Thankfully, she has kept that style with HOTEL PAPER (with a little something new). Honestly, the worst thing about this cd is it's title (which is also a track on the album). Originally, the title was ONE OF THESE DAYS) also a track on the album). The latter would have been a better choice, but Michelle definitely gets 'uniqueness' points right off the top for her quirky choice.

After thoroughly enjoying THE SPIRIT ROOM, I was a more than just a little curious about what Michelle would do for her second time out. Thankfully, she hasn't changed all that much musically. Lyrically, she has definitely matured (something that comes with experience and age). Of course, her natural talent helps! 'Are you happy now?' 'Find your way back' 'Tuesday morning' 'One of these days' 'Love me like that' and 'Where are you now?' sick with the folk-pop/rock formula that made THE SPIRIT ROOM such a great success. 'Breathe' however, leans more toward hard rock than anything (different for Michelle, but it sounds great). While 'Desperately' 'Hotel paper' 'Til I get over you' and 'It's you' have a softer, acoustic, country feel to them that begins half way through the album. Regardless of the styles, each suits Michelle's raw, Sheryl Crow-like vocals very well indeed. Overall, I say "HOTEL PAPER" is a great buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yay! Jan 15 2005
Format:Audio CD
Intro: When I first got this Cd and listened to this song the first thing that came to my mind was "Is this the right CD?". It's only 11 seconds, but I still like it. 4/5

Are You Happy Now?: The beginning is okay, then the chorus comes and then it's much better. The lyrics are not that good, but when Michelle sings them plus music it sounds alot better. 4.5/5

Find Your Way Back: I like this song because it calms me down and relaxes me. It has nice lyrics and I think michelle's voice is great! I like the chorus the best. 5/5

Empty Handed: At first I thought "Hey, this is a pretty good song" but then it got really REALLY boring. I only like the part where she starts going "ladadadadadada" and the chorus is ok. 2.5/5

Tuesday Morning: the lyrics are pretty weak, and I actually hate the chorus, wich is saying something because I always love choruses...Gets really annoying after a while. 2/5

One of These Days: I like it. It's nice and slow and it doesn't distract you from whatever your doing. 4/5

Love Me Like That(with Sheryl Crow): YAY!!! I love this song. But I've got a querstoin. I cannot hear anybody inging with her. Is Sheryl Crow that voice in the background repeating everything she says? I listened very closely and I faintly heard someone singing with her. Is that Sheryl? If so, I can barely hear her. Anyways, good song! Love it! 5/5

Desperatley: I like it. Michelle's voice is so-so, but I still like this song alot. 4/5

Breathe: I LOVE THIS SONG. Great lyrics, fantastic chorus and just everything is exellent! I could listen to this song over and over! I think it's probaly my fave song on this CD

Where Are You Now?: Really good song. Love the chorus. 5/5

Hotel Paper: At first I hated this song but it's grown on me. I don't get why they named the whole album after this song, but oh well. 3/5

'Til I Get Over You: A good song. I like the tune. But I don't like the people singing in French in the background. What's the point? Most people won't be able to understand what she's singing, like me. 4/5

It's You: Nothing specail. Kind of boring. 2/3
