En 1921, Virginia Woolf ne supporte plus son mal de vivre et se suicide. En 1951, Laura Brown ne se sent plus capable de composer avec sa vie de femme et de mère au foyer. En 2001, Clarissa Vaughan, en apparence comblée, semble également au bord du précipice. Ces trois destins fêlés sont reliés par le roman de Virginia Woolf, Mrs Dalloway.
Analysant la culpabilité féminine à travers les âges, Les Heures joue avec une construction temporelle ardue. Mais Stephen Daldry a relevé ce défi avec intelligence. Le réalisateur laisse à ses actrices, notamment à Nicole Kidman – qui mérite amplement son oscar –, la liberté de déployer leur talent.
De plus, ce DVD double contient plusieurs documents inédits (quatre mini-documentaires très fouillés, des commentaires du romancier, du réalisateur et des actrices) qui permettent de mieux comprendre le malaise social, sentimental et sexuel de ces trois femmes. --Helen Faradji.
