5.0 out of 5 stars House of Political Games April 28 2013
By Stella Carrier TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
"House of Cards" centers around the political scenarios of power couple Francis Underwood and Claire Underwood (played in a convincing way by Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright). The character of Francis Underwood stops at nothing to achieve his career ambitions and does not hesitate to do so at the expense of other people. The Netflix picture where his hand is covered in blood is very fitting for the series. The character of Francis Underwood does the narration and even justifies one of his schemes by saying that all people eventually die anyhow. The narration shown in "House of Cards" is considered breaking the fourth wall. My husband noted that technique when he was glancing over some of the scenes in "House of Cards". The character of Claire Underwood is not a shrinking violet either. One of her subordinates finds this out when Claire Underwood confronts the worker about challenging the agency. This series is good for those who like to watch political thrillers set in the Washington D.C. area.

I am a Kevin Spacey fan, and this is good tv, but not as good as the original British mini-series from which this is taken. As good as Kevin Spacey is, he just can't match the wicked charm that Ian Richardson had in the original House of Cards/To Play the King/The Final Cut. The British story really brings home that, while Francis may not be Macbeth, his wife is definitely Lady Macbeth. I recommend watching both versions (they are both available on Netflix, sorry Amazon). That said, totally support new creative products on new media. Keep it up, Netflix!

By One singular sensation... TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
The premise is interesting, but the first few programs are a bit slow and some of the characters poorly introduced. BUT, then it caught fire, and sizzled its way to the end of this season. Spacey is perfect as the totally unscrupulous villain, so good at it that it makes one wonder how nasty he can be off-screen. Robin Wright is, however, perfect. She is Goneril, Regan, Lady Macbeth, and Miss America all rolled up in one sinister sweet woman. The supporting cast do what they can with only one other character well-developed. And that character will be missing in Season Two. Also, if "House of Cards" shows us the typical American president, the world is in trouble.
I might have rated this series as a 5 star purchase, but I've seen the British version and everything there is just a bit more insidious, funny, witty, and down-right corrupt. Still, this version is well worth the money.
