A thoroughly enjoyable film, and definitely a high class piece of work. Along the lines of Crouching Tiger, Curse of the Golden Flower, The Banquet (Legend of the Black Scorpion), Warriors Of Heaven And Earth, The Promise, Hero etc.

Amazing film, but not for die hard animal lovers,

This review is from: House of Flying Daggers Bilingual (DVD)
We really enjoyed this film, except for two scenes that didn't sit well with us as animal lovers and PETA supporters. Many other reviews tell of the tragic love story in this film, the attractive actors and gorgeous actresses, the stunning and amazing martial arts scenes and sequences, the breathtaking scenery, and so forth, so I'll skip all the good stuff and get on to the two scenes we truly didn't like (and that make this film a no-keeper for our collection): 1) Some brutal-looking horse stunts. Knowing horses as we do, some of the contortions the horses landed in and noises they made truly made us wonder if the horses survived the stunts. Nasty looking stunts. 2) A scene where the male lead has tied a live squirrel to the sword he's tied to a tree (tied with thin cord), so that the struggling, panicked squirrel keeps the sword banging against the tree (making noise) to misdirect someone's attention. We watched this film on blu-ray and went frame by frame and it's a real squirrel with scrambling feet, toes moving independently, fur quivering... not a model or CG. Nasty. If you can overlook these scenes, this is a stunning film with amazing special effects, acting, martial arts, and beauty. If not for the animals in peril, this would have received 5 stars from us instead of 1 star.
