The Good Housekeeping Illustrated Cookbook: America's Bestselling Step-by-Step Cookbook, with More Than 1,400 Recipes When my wife decided to take off for parts unknown she decided to take everything that wasn't nailed down. Among the items was my 15 year old beat up from so much use was my cooking bible The Good Housekeeping cookbook. It was and now is again the best cookbook by far. With excellent pictures and cross referencing you can't go wrong!

This book has become a family treasure. I have had the book for years and could not find one that competes with it. All the recipes I made turned out just like the picture and tasted delicious, too.
All the recipes are pictured, but the pictures are separated from the recipes. All the pictures come in the beginning of the book in beautiful presentation, and then you can look up the recipe in a following page. The recipes are provided with clear instructions and step-by-step illustration. The measurements and cooking times are accurate. There is also a chapter on very useful information including nutrition guide, equivalent amounts, storage guide, eating outdoors, menu planning and entertaining, and a glossary of food and cooking terms. All provided with clear illustration and beautiful photography.
I bought this book when I was a beginner. Now, I am an experience cook, but I still amuse my family and friends with dishes from this amazing book. The Chicken Croquette is a top request. The Cannelloni, the Tetrazzini, the Pizza, the Dinner Rolls, the Chocolate-Cinnamon Torte and more, all turned out just yummy.

I was given an earlier edition of this book several years ago and used it so much that it was literally falling to pieces! I wanted to replace my old book and the new one is even better - updated.

This book is so-so. I like that it is illustrated but the dishes are mediocre. The recipes are simple so that is great but often the ingredients or methods are not the best so the dishes don't come out as well as they could. I do like the fact that there are color pictures in the front and the recipes are in the remainder of the book. As an experienced cook, the recipes themselves could be much better. The Good Housekeeping Great Baking book is excellent though. So I can't attribute the deficiencies to the series. This one just misses the mark. Good thing I got it free.

We have had a copy for years, in fact my wife owned it before we were married. As our two children grew up we used recipes from it together. Since we used it so much I thought they may like a copy of their own with their families. (They both like to cook).

I have had an older version of this for 10 years and I love it. I have only made a handful of recipes from it but I use it to look up how to cook things, what to look for when buying a certain item, and for little questions like - do you use the white or green parts of the leeks etc. andhow long to cook eggplant or something I'm not familiar with. It is a great how to reference even for a seasoned cook such as myself.

The photos of virtually every recipe are great. They give you a good idea of how the finished product is supposed to look. The step-by-step instructions, simply illustrated and described, are a huge help. But in such a comprehensive cookbook, I was expecting to find a temperature conversion chart, considering that conversion from electric to gas stoves is on the rise in our eco-conscious society. Just one extra page in the book, if that, would have done the trick. Living in Mexico, I cook with a gas oven and with metric temperature measurements. It would have been much more convenient if I didn't have to run to the computer to look up the temperature for the gas oven, when it could have been located in the "Useful Information" section at the back of the book. Sadly, this was lacking in this edition.

When I first got married at 20 years old, I was completely clueless in the kitchen. This book was a gift from my grandma, and it saved my life! Or at least turned me into a good cook...
Every single recipe in the book has a thumbnail photo, indexed in the front according to type.. eggs, poultry, meat, breads, etc. Being able to see what the heck the finished recipe is supposed to look like took the scare out of trying cook.
Now many many years later, I'm still using recipes from those food-stained pages, and still getting raves from dinner guests and co-workers!! And now I'm going to order it for a kitchen-impared friend of mine.
