HASH(0xa552be1c) out of 5 stars Piano pleases July 23 2005
By Margaret A. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I got this CD because of the title track - "Fred the Cat." The music is lyrical, incorporating many themes and styles from the Caucasus and Armenian traditions. Hovhaness writes well for both the piano and orchestra ("The Mysterious Mountain" being his best-known composition)and I enjoyed the flow and variety of the music on this CD. Fred must have been quite a cat!

HASH(0xa55a190c) out of 5 stars Enjoyable and unusual piano music Feb. 5 2015

I've heard a couple Hovhaness symphonies, and kind of enjoyed them, so I thought I'd check out his piano music. I quite like this CD - Hovhaness avoids the stereotypical 20th-century classical music mistake of trying too hard to be modern and avant-garde, instead opting to make nice melodies while incorporating various exotic influences. The overall effect is something that's pleasant, original, and interesting while being pretty accessible. I quickly picked up Rosen's other Hovhaness CD after listening to this, and enjoy that as well!

HASH(0xa559275c) out of 5 stars a composer worth meeting Sept. 4 2011

I wasn't familiar with Hovhaness' music. He is a highly accessible modern composer and the piano works represented here serve as a fine way to get acquainted with his work.
