By all objective measures, forty-year-old Andy Desanctis is a success. He has a lucrative legal career, a beautiful wife, a compassionate teenage daughter, and a high-rise condo on Toronto's waterfront. Yet ever since Andy received his mother's most recent phone call, he's been uneasy.
Despite many fond memories of growing up in Rosewater, he hasn't set foot in his rural hometown for fifteen years. Too many things happened there that he can't confront; too many cries for help were left unanswered. His mother's pleas were desperate, however, and Andy can't avoid returning to Rosewater any longer. His father is ill and his mother is scared; they both need him. There's just no choice but to walk into the fire.
Reuniting in Rosewater with the entire Desanctis clan, Andy must acknowledge the potential loss of his tough-as-steel father. On a deeper level, he must grapple with the things he saw, the choices he made, and what he should have done-decisions that continue to torment him as an adult. The homecoming poses a quandary: Andy can heal and move on, or he can let the past destroy him.

I could not put down How to Win a Chestnut Fight. It is a moving story that will stay with you long after you have finished. It is a compelling book that manages the rare feat of being both entertaining and compassionate. Mr. Dell' Apa is a welcome new voice on the literary scene.

Quite a beginning,

Dell'Apa's knack for describing the environment of Rosewater is what makes this story so utterly relating. Whether you grew up in Southern Ontario or someplace far away, if you were a child of the 70's or 80's you'll find a familiarity with the story that will keep you up late at night, unwilling to put the book down. What's more, there are lessons to be learned here. Dell'Apa tackles the themes of fear and regret and, in the process, reminds the reader of just how difficult childhood can be.A fantastic first novel! I can only hope Dell'Apa's sophomore effort will be arriving soon.

The interconnectedness of family, of friends, of community in How to Win A Chestnut Fight causes the reader to think and feel deeply from start to finish. Dell'Apa has a natural, inviting style. At different times, the novel is poignant, upsetting, humourous, thoughtful---yet always authentic.
