4.0 out of 5 stars More Bookish Thoughts... July 8 2012
By Reader Writer Runner TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
When I started "How to Cook Bouillabaisse in 37 Easy Steps," I expected a linear memoir of a couple's discovery of France, much like "A Year in Provence." However, Craft and Shaskin's book reads more like loosely connected anecdotes interspersed with French recipes.

This does not mean the book deserves a poor review; indeed, the couple (who founded Planet Organic Markets) have created a charming depiction of their meandering food trail from the markets of Paris to wine villages in Provence. Along the way, they learn about the dozens of France's certified cheeses, get schooled in the art of bistro cookery in the kitchen at the Ritz and master bouillaibaise under the tutelage of an eccentric chef in Avignon.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Diane and Mark's wonderful adventures in France, and loved their insider's view of the country's quirks and customs. I'm a self-proclaimed French food freak and can't wait to cook some of their recipes (although I may not be ambitious enough to try the bouillabaisse, even if it is only 37 easy steps).

Having recently returned from my own culinary trip to Paris, this book brought back a lot of great memories for me, especially reading about their experiences at some of the great cooking schools and gourmet food shops in Paris.

If you've never been to Paris or Provence, you'll be planning your first trip long before you reach the final chapter. Or, if you're like me and you've already been, you'll find yourself wanting to catch the first flight back.
