Product Description
From legendary director/writer James L. Brooks comes a humorous and romantic look at the "How Do You Know" question. When everything she's ever known is suddenly taken from her, Lisa (Reese Witherspoon) begins a fling with Matty (Owen Wilson), a major league baseball player and self-centered ladies man. Before their relationship takes off, Lisa meets up with George (Paul Rudd) a straight-arrow businessman facing his own serious issues, both with his father (Jack Nicholson) and the law. Just when everything seems to be falling apart it doesn't.

I felt uncertain after seeing this film in the theater, but decided to hold judgment till seeing it again at home.
We're used to black and white winners and losers. These characters are human. The "hero" is broke and unemployed. The "loser" is hugely successful. The "heroine" has lost her winner status and is at a loose end.
But there is heroic integrity in the Paul Rudd character. Great comedy and sweetness Owen Wilson's. And real growth in the Reese Witherspoon portrayal.
Then there are the reasons I bought this film and value it so highly. There is the wisdom underlying the script. The richness of silence; the awareness of when "expressing" - saying it aloud - can be destructive rather than helpful.
This film challenges but perhaps in a rich direction. I'm really glad I gave it a second chance. Or I would have been the loser.

I must admit that within the first half hour, we were about to stop the DVD and watch something else. Fortunately, it was just barely interesting enough to keep us hanging in there to see some of the outcomes.
It is definitely a slow character building story. Ironically, even though two characters are baseball sports elites, there is very little action in the movie.
The character building, leading to the end is touching, and draws you in after a while.
Somehow I was expecting better acting from Jack Nicholson.
Don't expect too much, and it will be an enjoyable viewing :-)

I had high hopes for this movie I love Paul Rudd, Reese Witherspoon and Owen Wilson so I was expecting this to be a great movie. However it was awful, if one had no idea who these 3 are they would have thought it was their first movie and that they were bad actors. I painfully sat through 55 minutes hoping it would get better and finally just had to turn if off.
