Good book but can be a problem if your desperate!, Jun 9 2003
This review is from: How To Draw Anime & Game Characters Volume 1 (Paperback)
I wanted to learn how to draw, so i got other books and this one too. I still dont really know how to draw. All this book dose is tell you the basics like: drawing cubes and 3-D objects like rectangels. It is like any other book that is titled: HOW TO DRAW!" It does have kool pictures of characters, and that about it.

Good for a Reference, Jun 19 2007
This review is from: How To Draw Anime & Game Characters Volume 1 (Paperback)
I hope my review helps. This is only my second review at Amazon and I'm still inept at writing reviews.
Tadashi Ozawa did a good job writing How to Draw Anime & Game Characters Vol. 1 Basics for Beginners and Beyond. However, even though it has a section on drawing bodies and faces, it assumes you have drawn a little before.
Chapter 1 involves the basics; the drawing process, stick figures, boxes, etc. There are three drawings (one done by a beginner, the second by an intermediate and the third by an advanced) that you can compare your own drawings to in this section. It also explains what could have been changed in the drawings to make them better.
Chapter 2 talks about facial expression and how you would draw faces for different character types (exaggerated, simple, realistic, etc). Even though they have pictures of several different types of heads, the only give you a broken down step of how to draw two heads, both which are in a ' view.
Chapter 3 shows you how to draw a body using cubes and then again with cylinders. When they show you the different types of characters found in anime and video games, though, they don't break down the steps on how they were drawn.
Chapter 4 shows the different types of characters found in video games (from hero/heroine to enemy advisers and enemy spies, and so one). This chapter also illustrates the different hairstyles (a little lacking), how to draw eyes (the process they used was a little hard for me to follow), how to draw feet, hands, heads turned in different degrees, and different character arrangements for a scene.
Finally, chapter 5, similar to chapter 1, shows different pictures done by students, which are then commented and improved on by a professional. The professional will then draw an improved version of the piece. You can compare your artwork to those done by the students and see areas where you may need help.
Overall, this was a good book. It explains how to draw bodies, hands, feet, and heads in cubes first then in cylinders. By just copying the boxes and cylinders, I actually improved a fair amount on my drawing. Even though they give you pointers on how to draw different character types found in anime and video game (and the pictures for the characters cover about half the book), they don't give a broken down step on how they were drawn. Otherwise, the book makes a good reference. This may a good book for reference (and comparing your drawings to others), but I would recommend getting another book for broken down instructions on how to draw.

Great book for beginners, Feb 26 2004
This review is from: How To Draw Anime & Game Characters Volume 1 (Paperback)
This is the first in a the "How to Draw Anime & Game Characters" series of books, so obviously this one starts with the basics beginning with shapes and lines. With that done, it progressively moves on to how you adapt those techniques into making your characters body, parts of the body, and face. They show how to draw many different body sizes, eye shapes, hairstyles, hands, feet, and so on from different angles. They also have some areas that put a beginner, intermediate, and professional artists work side by side and examine the problem areas. A nice feature to help you prevent common (and not so common) mistakes. Overall, it's a great buy to those who want to draw anime.
