Book Description

Sep 16 2003 Indispensable Guides for Godly Living
Do You Need Greater Self-Esteem–Or Something Else Entirely?

Western culture increasingly emphasizes the importance of self-love and self-esteem. Many of us believe we must “find” ourselves–and feel good about what we see–before we can experience significant spiritual growth. Focusing so much on ourselves, however, distracts us from pursuing the only source of true fulfillment. Do we, as God’s people, really need to love ourselves more? Or is there a wiser, biblical path that can lead us to joy that is not self-centered and fleeting, but God-focused and lasting?

Challenging the current fascination with self esteem, Leslie Vernick answers these questions and others that trip up Christians today. Offering surprising insights and practical helps that can make a real difference in your life, she shows how you can experience greater personal, relational, and spiritual growth while humbly adoring and glorifying your God.

Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Underscore this fact, writes Vernick, a licensed clinicalsocial worker with more than 20 years experience: over-emphasizingone's wants-and seeing those wants fulfilled-is not the path topersonal happiness. Rather, she purports, true happiness comes as aresult of being in right relation with God and others. Systematically,Vernick (How to Act Right When Your Spouse Acts Wrong) lays thefoundation to support this premise by first defining psychologicalcatchphrases in light of biblical principles and theologicalrepercussions. Terms such as self-image, self-esteem and self-love alltake a beating here, as Vernick unpacks these "self"-consumingdistractions as mere excuses for sinful thinking and behavior. Sheargues that too much self-obsession and not enough confidence in Godcan lead Christians toward discouragement, depression and destructivelife patterns. Christians need to have a realistic understanding oftheir divine worth and value, balanced by a sense that their successcomes because of Christ's active redemptive power. Vernick tacklessuch virtues as humility, selflessness, fear of God, intimacy with Godand joy, in chapters that are thoughtful though occasionally tediousand slow-moving. Overall, her timely and refreshing message is onethat serious Christian followers will likely pay attention to.
