Product Description

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8-- A visually enticing, large-format volume that aims to involve parents and children in the mutual exploration of scientific principles through hands-on experimentation. Hann begins by listing the requisite materials for investigation, the majority of which are household items. She encourages improvising when an object is not readily available. Each of the six sections-- matter; energy, force, and motion; light and sound; air and water; electricity and magnetism; and electronics and computers--combines a lively, understandable text with a number of activities and projects that illustrate the topic. Interspersed throughout are discovery sections that focus on individuals or events of scientific importance. The sections are logically arranged, but readers can skip around according to their own interests. The step-by-step instructions are very clear and include admonitions for adult supervision when advisable. The accompanying full-color photographic layouts are lavish and detailed, but not cluttered. They depict multiethnic boys and girls of varying ages (and occasionally adults) and clarify the steps of the experimental process in an imaginative and appealing manner. Diagrams are well designed, colorful, and clearly captioned. Measurements are presented in both metric and English units. Although minor, there are a few flaws. Occasionally, an undefined scientific term is used, and definitions for abbreviations of measurement could not always be located. A cut above most how-to science books.

From Kirkus Reviews

Subtitled 100 Ways Parents and Kids Can Share the Secrets of Science, this attractive collection is lamentably lacking in essential safety warnings. Although the introduction states that ``where adult supervision is essential, this is clearly stated,'' several experiments involve lighted candles or even a homemade alcohol burner without suggesting adult supervision; moreover, instructions for making the burner are dangerously inadequate- -e.g., there is no warning that alcohol spilled on hands or clothing is flammable. Aside from the safety issue, some experiments are without sufficient instructions. A model crane requires over 30 parts but the accompanying diagram, less than two inches square, gives no measurements, while a caption directs: ``You will need: balsa or plywood cut as shown.'' Good luck! Outstanding photos; glossary; extensive index. Beautiful, but unsafe! (Nonfiction. Adult) -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. 5.0 out of 5 stars Hands On Science for many ages!, Feb 22 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: How Science Works (Paperback)
As a home schooling family, we have found this book to provide the basics for a hands on science curriculum. The experiennts have been easy to perform and the materials needed easy to gather from home or the local hardware store. Our children ages preschool to fourth grade look forward to science due to the wide range of activities and "fun" educational projects. The directions and safety concerns are adaquate when the reader keeps in mind the title of the book is "How Parents AND Children....", and the book is enjoyed together. Group this book with a well stocked library for more indepth reading on the topics the book introduces and you have enough science for a year at least!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent way to understand even the most complex topics, Oct 5 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: How It Works: How Science Works (Hardcover)
I bought this books years ago because I was attracted to its beautiful photographs. Now I am using it with my 11 year old daughter as part of her science curriculum at home. It can be used in many ways, but even if you don't ever do the experiments, just seeing the photos makes the complex easy to understand. Even after getting a master's degree, I find I am really understanding things that I supposedly learned years ago. I highly recommend this book.

This review is from: How It Works: How Science Works (Hardcover)
This book has a special part in my heart as I bought it when I was a child of nine years.I would like to register my admiration to the simple yet condensed scientific information found in the book, the former mixed in a charming way with the outstanding colourful pictures. The book has also a unique thing which is experiments done on how to make a telephone,compass,radio,... I would again like to express my admiration to the boys and girls doing these experiments, with whom the book gained extra liveliness and beauty.
