Book Description

Sep 27 2011
From Chinua Achebe, father of modern African literature, comes a vivid fable about power and freedom.

In the beginning, all the animals lived as friends. Their king, the leopard, was strong but gentle and wise. Only Dog had sharp teeth, and only he scoffed at the other animals' plan to build a common shelter for resting out of the rain. But when Dog is ? ooded out of his own cave, he attacks the leopard and takes over as king. And it is then, after visiting the blacksmith's forge and knocking on Thunder's door, that the angry leopard returns to regain his throne by the menace of his own threatening new claws. In a riveting fable for young readers about the potency and dangers of power taken by force, Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe, author of THINGS FALL APART, evokes themes of liberation and justice that echo his seminal novels about post-colonial Africa. Glowing with vibrant color, Mary GrandPré's expressive and action filled paintings bring this unforgettable tale to dramatic life.

Whether read as a fable with African roots or as an allegory, this is a handsome treatment of a memorable tale.

About the Author

Chinua Achebe was born in Nigeria in 1930. An early career in radio ended abruptly in the national upheaval that led to the Biafran war, during which Achebe joined the Biafran Ministry of Information and represented Biafra on various diplomatic missions. In 1971, while also serving as editor of the Heinemann African Writers series, he helped to found the immensely influential literary magazine Okike. Achebe is now the David and Marianna Fisher University Professor and Professor of African Studies at Brown University. He has lectured widely, receiving many honors from around the world, including the Honorary Fellowship of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and honorary doctorates from more than thirty institutions. He is the recipient of Nigeria's highest award for intellectual achievement, the Nigerian National Merit Award. In 2007, he won the Man Booker International Prize for Fiction. He was also awarded the 2010 Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize, which recognizes cultural figures for having "an unprecedented impact in their chosen fields."

Mary GrandPré is perhaps best known for her jacket illustrations for the U.S. editions of the Harry Potter series. The illustrator of Phyllis Root's LUCIA AND THE LIGHT and numerous other picture books, she also worked on scenery development for the animated film ANTZ and has done illustrations for top editorial and advertising clients. She lives in Sarasota, Florida.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well done but violent Oct 3 2012

A fine if dark tale. I suspect it will make an interesting comparison with Mr. Achebe's upcoming There Was A Country; it is difficult as an adult to see this story as anything but an allegory for the politics of Nigeria. The illustrations are top notch and work quite well with the story and the hardback is beautifully done and large (roughly the size of a record cover for those of us old enough to remember records).

I'm pleased with the story, although it is a bit long to read for a bedtime story, closer to a half hour than the normal 10 minutes I try for, but maybe I'm being too lazy. The subject matter, with blood and bitter fights, is a tad violent for small kids, but then again I have a daughter who loves shiny pink princesses, so perhaps a rough and tumble boy or girl might like it better.
5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Illustrations and a Must-Read for Myth Lovers April 27 2012
By Young Mensan BookParade - Published on Amazon.com

"How the Leopard Got His Claws" is an African Myth. It is a story about group of animals who work together to build and shelter. The leopard is a good and fair leader but he is attacked by a dog who has sharp teeth and scares all the other animals into following him. The aspect of this book that I loved the most was the illustrations.

The story was good and the lessons it taught really made me think. Every time I read the story I find a different lesson. It made me consider what power and strength really are and how they can be used. The story also conveys a sense of justice (the dog gets what he deserves) and the feeling that you can do something nice for others and they may not appreciate it.

I think the only part about the story that I didn't care for was the violent fight. I think it could be scary for some kids (especially if they have an active imagination).

I would recommend this book for people 7yrs - adult. Boys would probably like this book more than girls. My parents enjoyed the book as much as I did. My dad even used this story to help me understand why things aren't always fair on the playground. I would give this book a 5 star rating because the story gets better and more interesting the more you read it and think about it. If you love myths, like I do, this is a must read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Animal Kingdom Nov 17 2011
By Catherine W. Hughes - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
In the beginning, the leopard ruled the forest as king, and all of the animals were friends. But, when the leopard decided to build a common shelter, the dog chose to leave. A storm flooded the land, and though the dog sought out the animal shelter, the other animals would not let him in. With fierce claws and sharp teeth, the dog fought the leopard king. With the leopard as his victim, the animals hailed the dog as their new leader. With claws and teeth from a blacksmith, and a voice that roared from the house of Thunder, the leopard returned to the village of the animals. The leopard scattered the animals into the forest with his roar, making the hunter the new master of the dog. Children ages 7-10 will enjoy this animal kingdom African tale.
