In How to See, How to Draw, you will discover how to tap into your powers of observation, strengthen your hand-eye connection, and draw the world around you with new skill and accuracy. Just take it one step at a time.

Claudia is an expert teacher, breaking down complex compositions into a series of achievable shapes and values that even beginners will understand. Through dozens of mini demonstrations, fun-to-do exercises and complete step-by-step instruction, you'll learn everything from basic drawing techniques to more challenging methods for rendering wonderfully rich, in-depth compositions.

Her visual instruction details how to:

  • Use a variety of drawing tools to suit your style and artistic intent
  • Learn to let go of preconceived ideas so you can observe lines, shapes and spatial relationships as they actually are
  • Create strong compositions through comparison and proportional control
  • Find, fix and avoid common mistakes by using simple grids and guide lines
  • Understand and work with perspective to create the illusion of depth
  • Reveal form through light and shadow
  • Explore the potential of texture to create mood and movement

Claudia's drawings illuminate a range of subjects, including portraits, landscapes, animals and still life. You can practice using her reference photos and drawings, or you can apply her exercises to your own subjects.

Start today, Claudia's way! Following her masterful guidance, you'll see the world through new eyes and draw better than you ever have before.

This review is from: How to See, How to Draw: Keys to Realistic Drawing (Hardcover-spiral)
As an artist "wannabe," this book is the most complete how-to-draw book that I have seen. It begins with the usual topic of materials and supplies, then progresses steadily to cover every topic that I would think is covered in extensive art classes for beginners. Two things that stand out in Nice's book: 1) in a concise style, she gives reasons to support her suggestions, helping readers to remember a process or material; 2) the examples are plentiful, detailed, and, what I find refreshing, include several "what's wrong" sketches--typical mistakes--why they're wrong and how to fix them. The wire binding lays pages flat for easy viewing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this book and learn to draw, Nov 27 2010

This review is from: How to See, How to Draw: Keys to Realistic Drawing (Hardcover-spiral)
Claude Nice has created this wonderful book. And the beginning drawing person like myself will find this book most informative. What I like most about any reading material is... does the author speak to me though the pages? In other words does it seem like the author is right in the room speaking to me? I felt Claude Nice was and is sitting in my room each time I read a paragraph from this book.

The Viewing Grid was a wonderful idea.

Be sure to read the introduction before you buy this book.

I was interested in page 22 and 23 on Observational Skills because there were faces of people on the pages.

This book is a must have for any person who is wanting to draw or has been drawing for ages.

There is a chapter on Developing Textures, that is full of wonderful ways to gain that correct texture. And who knew that rubbing a pencil over sand paper could make it look like a frog WOW!

Definately a must have book!
