5.0 out of 5 stars Strange and Wonderful, Like Faerie Itself Mar 24 2011
By Reader of quality books - Published on Amazon.com

Here is the most curious little tome. Matthews and Froud's book is a Lewis Carroll-esque romp through the mirror into the otherworld of Faerie. I read it and thoroughly enjoyed it, but the real magic started when my eight year son picked up the book. His experience of the book was tactile and very immediate...he ran his fingers over the spirals as he read, spoke to the characters, walked through the book WITH the art and text. Here is an eight year old's review, in his own words:

"This book sucked me in! When you start reading it, you shrink down to the size of your hand and have to walk through the book, from one portal to another. And you can't get out until you come to the last portal...which is reading the book all the way through. Each word you read glows blue. When all the words are blue, the last portal opens and you're out and done. Until next time! The book is filled with Faerie secrets, but they are so magic, I can't really remember them. The faeries are very realistic, I can tell you that! One looked just like a real one I've seen, so I know the faeries in the book are real ones."

Adults who love colorful, wondrous faeries and clever prose will adore this book. For children (and those young at heart), here is a key to the gate at the bottom of the garden. I (and my son) highly recommend this book. There really is nothing else quite like it!

5.0 out of 5 stars More Than a Book April 22 2011

This book is a trip! A trip through Faerie, filled with images and words that do wonderfully at switching perception and being utterly delightful. There are many portals, many symbols, many keys, like an enchanted collection of crop circles in colours, some which even change when looking at them from different angles. Lots of fun things to pull, flip and twist. It's a delight of a book. It does feel alive! I love the many purples, greens and the well known browns of Froud. I wished I had owned this book as a child, it would've been my greatest treasure, no doubt!

The Glyph of the Sidhe, which presented itself in Matthew's "The Sidhe" book is also present on many places in this one, making it an even greater delight. I think this book serves as a meditation tool in many ways, to tap into the worlds through the images, the keys.

This is more than a Faery book, more than an art or poetry book, more than a book!

5.0 out of 5 stars From the heart... April 26 2011
By Emily Carding - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
No-one can put something in your hand that will guarantee you being able to see Faeries, but if you allow a journey to open your heart...well, you may learn that seeing is not necessarily believing, but experiencing may be knowing, and feeling may be believing, and seeing may be in the heart of the beholder.

Be prepared to be led to clarity through confusion, to truth through riddles and to a genuine glimpse or more of the Otherworld through a few pages of paper and card!

How to See Faeries is a much anticpated collaboration between two respected visionaries, the seer and author John Matthews and the mystical artist Brian Froud. Through what at times reads very much as channeled rhyme and prose and a series of visual clues and gateways, this book takes you on a breathtaking ride into Faery. It is all at once a delightful pop-up book for adults, a profound taste of the spiritual dimension within the land and a barrier-pushing visual treat. It is an adventure that repays the time spent within its pages, for if you do truly open your heart, slow down, and pay attention to the messages given, there are many different paths to Faery that may be discovered here. The book is a map to places full of wonder, you need only to open your heart and expand your mind to embrace the journey and find the destination.

And even if you don't find them, you may find that this is a gate that swings both ways! Be prepared for some interesting visitors...
