Book Description

HIS HOLINESS THE DALAI LAMA REVEALS THE KEY TO ACHIEVING HAPPINESS AND A MEANINGFUL LIFE.

In How to See Yourself as You Really Are, the world's foremost Buddhist leader teaches listeners how to recognize and dispel misguided notions of self and embrace the world from a more realistic -- and loving -- perspective.

Step-by-step exercises help listeners shatter their false assumptions and ideas and see the world as it actually exists. His Holiness sets the stage for discovering the reality behind appearances. But getting past one's misconceptions is only a prelude to right action, and the final section describes how to harness the power of meditative concentration to the service of love, and vice versa, so that true altruistic enlightenment is attained. Enlivened by personal anecdotes and intimate accounts of the Dalai Lama's own life experiences, How to See Yourself as You Really Are is an inspirational and empowering guide to achieving self-awareness that can be enjoyed by spiritual seekers of all faiths. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

About the Author

His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, was born in 1935 to a peasant family in northeastern Tibet and was recognized at the age of two as the reincarnation of his predecessor, the Thirteenth Dalai Lama. The world's foremost Buddhist leader, he travels extensively, speaking eloquently in favor of ecumenical understanding, kindness and compassion, respect for the environment, and, above all, world peace.

Jeffrey Hopkins, Ph.D., served for a decade as the interpreter for the Dalai Lama. A Buddhist scholar and the author of more than thirty-five books and translations, he is emeritus professor of Tibetan and Buddhist studies at the University of Virginia, where he founded the largest academic program of Tibetan Buddhist studies in the West.

I have read the book once and it has altered my thinking. Now I'm reading it again, and am looking forward to a deeper level of understanding of my existence. If you haven't had luck with seeking guidance or cannot afford to see someone to help you through your problems, this book may just be the thing you've been looking for. It is simple, to the point and reveals things we often forget. In it are parts for reflection and mini mediation moments. Wishing you inner peace.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it, April 12 2008
A great little book that is easy to read, and thought provoking. With guided meditations, this is a great introductory book to Buddhism that I would highly recommend for teenagers/young people that might not have read much on this fascinating philosophical religion, but are interested. I plan to pass it on to my 22 year old daughter when I visit her next month. She has talked to me about the Dalai Lama in the past and was fortunate to have seen him when he made a visit to her home town a few years ago. She was awe inspired by him. This book will benefit everyone. It could also be read as a light refresher or used as a carry along in your travels because of the way the meditations are laid out, you can flip to anyone in the book and use it as an instant guide. It is not overwhelming and makes you feel "oh so good". Peace and love to all who read this.
