Book Description

Jun 1 2006
Miranda Peabody had no patience for the other students in class and just didn’t understand why they couldn’t be as smart and talented as she was. Her teacher, Mrs. Klemp, suggested that she try to understand other people by "standing in their shoes." After much searching, she learns the true meaning of "standing in someone else’s shoes" and having empathy for others. This full-color, illustrated storybook for grades PK-4 includes discussion questions as well as activities to enhance learning about empathy.

Activities include:

Labeling Some Tools of Understanding
Shoe Maze
Draw Yourself

This is a cute book and a good way to discuss empathy with children. As an elementary school counselor I used this book with Kindergarteners and found that it was a little too complex for them to understand. I think it's more appropriate for 1st or 2nd grade.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not enough mention about "empathy" Jan 27 2009

Although the book is all about empathy, I was disappointed that it didn't mention "empathy" more often. I used it to work with a group of students needing help with improving their social skills, and the book's illustrations are big, graphic and can be complicated and distracting. Although the pictures are for 1-3rd grade, the tone and message is not easily understood and is better suited for 4-6th graders. Just my thoughts.

I am a counselor and used this book with students in teaching lessons on tolerance, accepting differences, and empathy. It is powerful! I could easily use it in grades k-5 (elementary) teaching the concepts at a different level in each grade!
