Review

"While reviewing this book, I immediately recognized some activities that my son did . . . and I remembered how much he benefited from these activities . . . such as sorting and matching, reading, math, and motor tasks. The book also provides IEP goals in an Appendix, which can be a helpful resource for parents."

Product Description

First Runner-Up in the 2006 Writer's Notes Book Awards, this book utilizes the strengths of children with ASD to help them develop new skills. Tasks are visually oriented, consistent; expectations are clear. Using easy-to-make "task boxes" children learn:
  • motor
  • matching
  • sorting
  • reading
  • writing
  • and math skills
Tasks include:
  • pushing items through a small openings (children love the "resistance" it takes to push them through)
  • matching simple, identical pictures or words
  • sorting objects by color, size, or shape.
Ideas are plentiful, materials colorful, and children love the repetitive nature of the tasks, which help them learn to work independently! Sample data sheets are included.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every Special Needs Teacher NEEDS this book, Mar 9 2012
This review is from: How Do I Teach This Kid?: Visual Work Tasks for Beginning Learners on the Autism Spectrum (Paperback)
This book was recommended by a Psychological Associate for our high needs' classroom. It's like a recipe book with photos. It is simply laid out for any teacher, parent or student support person to use. It helps support the ABLLS-R assessment tool and the students enjoy and respond to the activities. Every Special Education Teacher should have one, and parents with children with special needs should make sure their children's teachers have a copy. Hope there will be more like this.
Reasonably priced.

5.0 out of 5 stars an excellent beginning resource for education, Sep 6 2011
This review is from: How Do I Teach This Kid?: Visual Work Tasks for Beginning Learners on the Autism Spectrum (Paperback)
This book has some great ideas and activities for students who are just beginning to master learning skills such as matching, colours, inserting things into containers, etc. I think it is a great resource for classroom teachers who are less familiar with teaching a student with Autism., but even as an experienced teacher I still will refer to it. It provides very good examples with visuals and photos, using things that are easily available such as egg cartons and shoe boxes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great resource for special ed teachers!, Jun 23 2006
By Julie B - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: How Do I Teach This Kid?: Visual Work Tasks for Beginning Learners on the Autism Spectrum (Paperback)
Really great ideas for activities in my classroom! There are 80 different matching, sorting, reading, writing and math tasks included in this book. These really help the student to learn how to work independently and stay on task. There are photos, descriptions, and list of materials needed for each task. I highly recommend this book to educators as well as parents. "So You Want to be a Special Education Teacher" is also a humorous, insightful, very enjoyable, must read for your library.

I am former teacher and now a homeschooler. One of my sons has ASD and this book gives a lot of great ideas that otherwise would probably be overlooked. Definitely, worth the read. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly What I've Been Looking For, Sep 8 2005
By K. Schmoldt "kschmoldt" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: How Do I Teach This Kid?: Visual Work Tasks for Beginning Learners on the Autism Spectrum (Paperback)
My son is 3.5 years old and has autism. He's in a TEACCH based program once a week, for two hours as well as a regular half day preschool. I've been looking for ideas for work tasks similar to those at TEACCH to reproduce at home, and this book is a great blessing. There are color pictures and a materials list for every task, and a lot of the tasks use things I already have. I can't wait to start using it. A definite must buy for anyone wanting to work with their autistic child at home.
