Book Description

Aug 1 2008 How to Read
Plato is the foundational thinker of European speculative thought. He was the first Western writer to undertake a comprehensive and rigorous study of the fundamental categories of reality and value, and few philosophers have escaped his influence or rivaled the depth of his works, many of which have remarkable dramatic power and literary beauty. His writings range over ethics, politics, religion, art, the structure of the natural world, mathematics, the human mind, love, sex, and friendship. Richard Kraut explores the intellectual milieu that gave rise to Plato’s thinking and emphasizes the influence of Socrates, whose devotion to the examined life and death at the hands of Athenian democracy are memorialized in many of Plato’s writings. The full extent of his moral and political thought and its metaphysical underpinning are investigated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great content. Terrible quality. Mar 26 2010
By Alexandra Carbone - Published on Amazon.com
The author of this book is one of the foremost Plato scholars in the English speaking world and does a wonderful job with the book.

The book's content is great. If functions marvelously as an introduction to Plato's thought, and will be of interest even to those with years of experience with the author of the Republic.

The book discusses many of Plato's central works and the different theories on metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, politics, and aesthetics in them.

The main problem with the book is the absolutely terrible quality of the paper the book is printed on. Having purchased other books from the "How to read" series I was very surprised and displeased with the materials used for this book. Other "How to read" books are printed on acid free paper and are bound to last. This book, perhaps even more annoyingly because it is in terms of content one of the best in the series and thus I will consult it over and over, is going to fall apart quickly especially if you live in a place with any humidity. The pages are made of crappy mass market paperback paper. Honestly, it is a shame. I would have been more than willing to shell out a couple of dollars more for a better built book.
