Product Description

Paul Kunkel, who toilet-trained his first cat while in college and who has continued to train his own and his friends' cats ever since, presents a foolproof, 21-Day-Program for teaching any litter-trained cat between the ages of 6 months and 10 years to use a toilet instead of a litter box. (Older cats can still be trained, but the process will probably take longer.) Requiring nothing more than magazines and/or newspapers, masking tape, heavy-duty plastic wrap, and a supply of fresh litter, the plan begins with you placing the box next to the toilet and, after gradually raising it to the height of the seat, ends with the cat--well, using it like any other member of the family. For life. Along the way, concerned owners learn why toilet-trained cats may be happier and healthier cats. In well-researched, fact-filled text, Kunkel traces the history and behavior of this barely domesticated animal and proves why the box is bad for cats; why many cats equate the smell of a litter box with danger; and why the fragrances, deodorants, dyes, and disinfectants found in most litters are detrimental to your pet's well-being.

Ingram

Last year Americans spent $400 million on 1.8 million tons of cat litter--enough to fill the Empire State Building two and a half times! Now, Paul Kunkel presents a foolproof, 21-Day Program for teaching any litter-trained cat between the ages of six months and ten years to use a toilet instead of a litterbox. Illustrations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works -- With a Little Ingenuity!, Sep 27 2003

This review is from: How to Toilet-Train Your Cat: 21 Days to a Litter-Free Home (Paperback)
My experience with the instructions provided in this book was successful! After reading a few of the reviews where readers expressed dissatisfaction with this product, I must emphasize this: Read the book IN ITS ENTIRETY, and the actual day to day instructions TWICE through, before starting!

I can agree that there are times when support would be great, such as in the case of my 7 month old adolescent cat shredding the saran wrap stretched over the toilet bowl in the later sections of the steps. HOWEVER, substiting a light disposable plastic plate worked! Also, try to schedule the days that switch from the box to the saran wrap/plate method on a weekend or some other time where you can MONITOR your pet's progress, and avert any disasters!

Have patience, a little common sense, and a smidge of ingenuity, and this book will free you from litter scooping, as promised!

5.0 out of 5 stars It worked but patience is required, Aug 11 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: How to Toilet-Train Your Cat: 21 Days to a Litter-Free Home (Paperback)
I was skeptical about trying to toilet train my then-four-year-old cat. But with plenty of patience and persistence (and a few unpleasant setbacks), it did work. It took about four months, a dedicated bathroom, and the alternate method described in the book, but it was so worth it. We have not had a litter box in our home since then, and that was four years ago. When my cat had surgery recently and could not jump, I gave her a temporary litter box, which she took to immediately. However, once she recovered, and I removed the litter box and pointed the way to the toilet, she returned to her toilet-trained habits. I know she would prefer a litter box but she knows the toilet is what she is supposed to use and she does that consistently. It took a bit longer (a few years) for her to realize that all toilets are for the same purpose, but now that she has figured that out, she is ready for a road trip!

5.0 out of 5 stars I was amazed!, April 13 1998

I was skeptical whether this book would work, but thought we would give it a try. Now, it's 21 days later, and NO MORE LITTER BOX! Great book!
