Howling V & VI Double Feature!, May 3 2008
This review is from: Howling 5:Rebirth/Howling 6:Fr (DVD)
Howling V - Good story... Strangers win a trip to a castle and they begin to die one by one. The music is great (Tho maybe a bit over the top... I actually really like it :P). The acting is bad, but you get used to it. The werewolf is never clearly seen and a lot is left to the imagination. Despite it's fallbacks I have to say that this is my fav Howling sequel.
Howling 6 - The werewolf is the hero in this one... An interesting enough plot. It seemed sort of blah at times. The acting was okay (minus the preacher's daughter). The werewolf could have looked more wolflike... Still worth checking out if you enjoyed the sequels before.
Edition: I have both versions of this disc... I recommend the Artisan release from 2003 if you can find it. Better picture, sound and cover art. My copy from Timeless Media came sealed, but the disc was still scratched up. The picture is grainy and the cover art is pretty shoddy - Why is the moon in front of the trees?

OUSTANDING Creature Double Feature!!!, Aug 6 2008
This review is from: Howling 5:Rebirth/Howling 6:Fr (DVD)
Howling V: The Rebirth
A handpicked group of American tourists have each won a trip to a Romanian
castle that was closed down for 5 centuries. They arrive with their mysterious
host Count Istvan, who further leads them into the dark corridors of mystery.
As nightfalls, a blizzard blows into the countryside at full force, pinning
them within the thick walls for the night.
Then one of the tourists wanders off in curiosity and disappears. The others
think little of the situation, knowing the wanderer probably just got lost.
Then a few other disappear. One by one, the remaining tourists start getting paranoid of each other. Then they find the remains of one of the missing guests. Now they know that they're not alone. They're going to have to work together to stop this unseen and savage enemy who kills when the moon is full and pierces the night with a bloodcurdling howl.
Howling VI: The Freaks
Ian is a drifter, wandering from place to place. His latest stop is the
small dusty town of Canton Bluff. Famous for it's orange orchards and short
on its water supply, Canton Bluff has very little to offer Ian. Then he meets
a preacher named Dewey and his lovely daughter Elizabeth who live in an old church Dewey's restoring. Dewey's deal for Ian is a bed in the attic and a fine home cooked meal, to which Ian agrees.
Then the Carnival arrives in town. It's run by the strange but charming R.B Harker (Legendary Bruce Payne), who shares a dark past with Ian. RB Harker is also a dangerous and deadly vampire!! But Ian also has a dark secret of his own. By the light of the full moon, Ian takes shape into a creature of the night that screams for the full moon. This time (Since Howling III: The Marsupials) We get to root for the werewolf!!
This is an example of a great compilation! This double feature DVD may not have any special features, but the treat of having both fine films (2 of my favorites!) on one disc is rewarding enough! I was overwhelmed with joy when I first got mine. At first I was not expecting much outta either films (But I'm a HUGE fan of werewolves) but MAN was I wrong! Both fine films deliver well on their ends!
Note To Buyers: The Artisan Double Feature DVD of 'Howling V: The Rebirth &
Howling VI The Freaks' May Be Rare and/or much more expensive because it's out of print, but the image quality is much cleaner and the soundtrack is
much more crisp than that of the Timeless Media Group version.
IF you can some how get your hands on the Artisan version, DO SO.
My ratings:
The Howling: 10/10
Howling II: 5/10
Howling III: 10/10
Howling IV: 3/10
Howling V: 9/10
Howling VI: 9/10

Good Werewolf Flicks, Oct 12 2006
This review is from: Howling 5:Rebirth/Howling 6:Fr (DVD)
There are only 3 Howling movies that I have enjoyed the most.
1. The Howling
2. The Howling: Rebirth
3. The Howling: Freaks
Again they managed to produce great costume/cosmetic look for the beasts and not CGI effects when producing monsters. I have nothing against CGI and other special effects. They produce a lot of good quality movies. But what I like is, is that old school creature effects, which is artistic. It takes talent to produce such a set and I find it in all the Howling movies. But these three happen to have the best stories in them. You will like the twist in Howling: Freaks. It was something I was hoping to see and got to do when this film came out. Just look at Underworld with the whole werewolf vs vampire take! Howling: Freaks seems more plausible for its time and genre which I find to be one of the first to introduce this kind of plot. Original in itself. THe howling: Rebirth deals with a castle. It provides mystery and I enjoyed it because it was like watching Clue but with a werewolf involved and more creepy. These should be in your collection of werewolf films. I hope they do still produce more Howling movies but not like #7.
