5.0 out of 5 stars Love this one, July 16 2004

This review is from: Hula W/O for Beginners (DVD)
I read other reviews here and got kind of turned off on this DVD even before I tried it out. So finally I checked it out from the library to see, popped it in the DVD player, not expecting much of a workout or much fun. But to my surprise it was pretty challenging and a lot of fun. I worked up quite a sweat, and if you're someone who works out on the elliptical machine 5 days a week or runs 25 miles a week you may not get as much a workout as I did, but I loved it. It's not quite traditional hula, more aerobics blended with hula movements, and a lot of the hula are very similar to bellydance, but this is more challenging than a lot of bellydance tapes out there. Kili shows each move once or twice, moves it up to tempo, and then she strings several moves together a few times so you get used to it and it gets more intense that way and you get to do a little dance with her. I didn't master it right away, which I actually prefer, so it remains a challenge. A lot of fun, well filmed and the setting is beautiful. It's not traditional hula music but more hula 'rock' but I'm not complaining. I got a really good sweat worked up and I felt great afterwards. Mission accomplished.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I thought it would be, Jun 12 2003

Yes, this video does teach a 'Hula Workout' and appears to have clear instructions. However, the music is atrocious. I was looking forward to some traditional Hawaiian music, the reason that I thought this workout would be fun, but the whole thing is set to a heinous track called "Hula Rock" which sounds like a lightly Hawaiian flavored takeoff of a fifties bee-bop style song. I watched this once, and couldn't even get through the thing. The music really ruins this experience.

2.0 out of 5 stars THIS IS NOT WHAT I HAD IN MIND!, May 9 2003

I, too, expected something quite different. I wanted a fill-in tape to work my hips and thighs in a slow-paced manner. I expected beautiful Hawaiian music, not the goofy Hula Rock. Now I'm on an internet search for another hula tape, but it seems so far that Kili's tapes are the only ones in existence. I go through the instructional parts where the steps are broken down and do this several times, fast-forwarding through the Hula Rock. While I do learn the steps, I definitely didn't get my money's worth.
