Product Description

Human Resource Management in a Business Context 3rd edition is a comprehensive introductory textbook addressing the needs of business students studying HRM modules on first year courses and beyond. It approaches the theory and practice of people management from a global perspective firmly placing HRM within a wider business context. This delivers a highly accessible introduction to the subject for students approaching HRM from a range of business-related disciplines. The textbook has a truly international outlook with extensive real-life material from the UK, US, Canada and Australia throughout the book illustrating the practical application of key HRM concepts. This edition includes greater coverage of international HRM, diversity and organizational culture, and highlights HRM ?hot topics? including outsourcing, the aging workforce, and the psychological contract.

From the Author

This book is intended to provide a comprehensive account of the critical issues in Human Resource Management (HRM), taking the reader from an introductory level to a relatively sophisticated understanding of an increasingly important business topic. We will see that there is no universal agreement on the meaning of HRM. In fact, there are varying and contradictory models. Yet they embody common elements that distinguish them from previous approaches to managing people – specifically, personnel management. The book takes a distinctive approach, locating the subject of human resource management and its various perspectives within a business context. We recognize that readers will come from a variety of backgrounds, that some will become HR specialists but that many are interested in the relationship between human resource management and other business functions. This is not a ‘cookbook’ of best practices: it is firmly focused on human resource management in the real world. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strong international content, Feb 10 2004
By
HR Reviewer (Vancouver, BC, Canada) - See all my reviews
The 2nd edition of this book preserves all the best qualities of the original edition while adding considerably to its international content. New chapters have been added, including discussion on high-performance organizations, knowledge management, international legislative frameworks, human capital, HRM in smaller organizations, entrepreneurship, pay and compensation, work-life balance, employee involvement and stress. Numerous case studies and examples are taken from Australia, Canada, South Africa, Asia and Europe as well as the UK and US. All-in-all, a more balanced and authoritative, general HR textbook than the first edition but still uniquely focused on HR in its business context.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent, unique introduction to HRM., July 19 1998
By stern@primenet.com, Yvette Borcia, Author, St... - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Human Resource Management in a Business Context (Paperback)
This book distinguishes itelf from other HRM introductory texts buy focusing on the integration of HR with the business and organization. Its breadth and depth are very impressive. The text has an international quality, providing insights into circumstances and issues in many countries. Be aware, however, that because it is written by an emeritus professor in the UK, sections relating to law, and many specific references, are limited in applicability; if this is a problem, it can be worked around for students of other nations. Overall, this is an excellent introduction to human resource management. Every chapter includes further reading, review questions and problems for discussion.
