About the Author

Award-winning author Jane Yolen has written more than three hundred books, including Owl Moon, winner of the Caldecott Medal, and the New York Times bestselling How Do Dinosaurs . . . ? series. Her work has garnered some of the most prestigious awards in children’s publishing. When she is not writing, Jane composes songs and works as a professional storyteller. She is the mother of three grown children and a grandmother of six.

As a child, Jane was crazy about horses, though she knew only the ones who drew the hansom cabs in New York City’s Central Park. But once her family moved to Connecticut, she got her chance to ride Lipizzaners, the great white “airs aboveground” horses. She has never forgotten the feeling of riding such powerful, beautiful, and well-trained steeds.

Jane now lives in Hatfield, Massachusetts.

I purchased this for my grandson who "loves" horses. His parents read it to him each nite before going to bed. The pictures are wonderful.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best of Jane Yolen Nov 8 2012
By Basil - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I am a fan of Jane Yolen's work, some if it is wonderfully lyrical and soothing; so I thought this would be a great book for the kids. However, it is predictable and repetitive. Employing the hush little baby lullaby to display horses in various settings as their mothers watch over them, there is nothing intrinsic to the book to carry it forward, unlike Hush, Little Dragon which is cute and tells an entire story by playing upon the same timeless lullaby. In contrast Yolen's book relies more upon the love that young children have for ponies and the sweet memories that everyone has of the lullaby. But this only takes it so far. If this book had been written by a less well-known author, no children's book publisher ever would have taken it, and rightfully so.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great bedtime story (that you can also sing!) Jun 29 2012
By SJ_LG_Momma - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
My daughter (4 1/2) and I came across this book in the library. At first I thought it was just a cute book and I was letting her pick what she wanted (she picked this and LMNO Peas). When we had to return it she was upset. Then two weeks ago she mentioned it again. I got it for her birthday and she was very excited to open this book :) Its a must read every night, I sing the words which makes her happier.
