The only vocal comparison that comes close is Nina Simone. I Am A Bird Now, is the second full-length album from extraordinary New York artist, ANTONY & THE JOHNSONS, and features contributions from both Antony's peers (RUFUS WAINWRIGHT, DEVENDRA BANHARDT) and heroes (LOU REED, BOY GEORGE). Their involvement reflects both their admiration for Antony, and his unique place in the contemporary arts community. Antony was recently in Australia to perform at the LEONARD COHEN tribute nights at the Sydney Opera House. BERNARD ZUEL reported in the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD: And in the category of "where the hell has he been hiding?" was the hulking, shambling figure of New York singer Antony, who left open mouths on and off the stage with his heart-piercing explorations of The Guests and the prayer-like If It Be Your Will. The reacton from the audience on each night was astounding, they were simply transfixed by his vocal delivery and performance. I Am A Bird Now is going to be 2005s left-field hit record. Antonys gospel songs come from another world.

WOW..this music is so haunting it is disturbing at times yet I can't seem to stop listening..give this cd time and an open mind and it will soon be one you will listen to over and over..

I first saw Antony perform "If it be your will" on Leonard Cohen- I'm Your Man. His lilting voice uprises & falters admist strangely dark melodies. This music will infuse your mind, body & soul & stay nestled in the darkest corners of your very being.

Possessing a stunning multi-octave trill reminiscent of Nina Simone or Brian Ferry, NYC pianist/vocalist Antony first won attention through a series of live sets opening for Current 93, but the groundswell came last year when Devendra Banhart closed his Golden Apples of the Sun compilation with Antony's haunted rendition of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Lake". I Am a Bird Now realizes the potential at which that song hinted, capturing a serene, brooding solitude and desperate longing while exploring the fluidity of gender and singing plaintive letters from hermaphroditic children.
