4.0 out of 5 stars War Games goes all Sinister type film Sept. 13 2014
By Tommy Dooley HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
Remember the days when you used to play `war' with your mates? Well this is what this film is all about - but it is also about a whole lot more. Split into two groups these guys have a very well organised game of `war' - with rules and everything - we just used to shoot the bejesus out of each other. One group is led by P.K. Sullivan and he has a sidekick in best pal Paul Kwon. They are up against a chess and tactics loving Quinn. Quinn's disparate command contains Skinner who has behavioural issues and a girl! Yes these guys are all equalitied up and have Jessica. She is a bit on the calculating side and has a girlie crush on Quinn.

So loyalties established and the pecking order truly in place - the game can begin. But what should just be a simple game of kill your mates and grab a flag turns into something much darker. Many issues are looked at here and it is not always subtle but it is engaging.

All of the young cast put in great performances but this is not a comedy as has been claimed a couple of places. It has also been called a `modern day Lord of the Flies'; well that is very misleading indeed, but it is still a good film. Made in Canada and all in English and a run time of 94 minutes which means it doesn't out stay its welcome. I rented mine and that may be the better option as once you have seen the twists there will be little need for further viewings.

Anyone who used to play war when they were a kid would totally relate to this movie. Todays politically correct world can learn from this movie. Its all about imagination or lack of in todays kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Film July 27 2013

Easily one of the best movies of the year so far, I absolutely loved it. Funny, charming and completely relatable, but also really disturbing and very powerful. It also featured some amazing performances from the cast (all of whom are kids). I highly recommend seeing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!!! Nov. 13 2013

"We shall pay our price, bear any burden, oppose any foe to never surrender our flag"; like Gary Larson's "The Far Side" where the cartoonist puts animals in human situations, there's something in movies that's funny when kids are placed in adult situations. If you like kids cussing, were a fan of the 70's movie with Jodie Foster and Scott Baio, "Bugsy Malone", or "Kelly Leak" and Tatum O'Neal in the 70's version of "Bad News Bears" this modern movie will take you to that same, rare place. It reminded me of being a kid playing war in the jungle but without the landowner kicking you off their property 15 minutes into the game. I thoroughly enjoyed this gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow... Suprisingly good Oct. 30 2013

This was a very likeable and unusual film. I liked that it did not pull any punches in terms of honesty portraying childhood war games. The portrayal of the group psychological dynamics, was this film's greatest achievement. Yes, when we were young, we did all of those "bad" things when we were kids...We cussed, smoked and even drank and did other "bad" stuff....and we also played war in the woods with good friends and not so good friends. Those actors must have loved working with that hardware! There were also clever little "nods" to other movies in there as well... Watching it gave me that familiar and comfortable feeling, like eating a bowl of tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwhich. This was a decent movie, I'll end up watching this one again.

I heard so many great things about this film, and they were all true. Utterly captivating, through and through. All these kids will hopefully go on to huge careers.
