Product Description

Review

"It is a tribute to Filey's storytelling abilities that he can still tantalize so many Torontonians with the memory of an amusement park that ignominiously met the wrecker's ball more than 40 years ago." (Steve Pitt Canadian Book Review Annual )

Product Description

First published in 1982, I Remember Sunnyside is a mine of golden memories, bringing back to life an earlier Toronto, only hints of which remain today.

Like the city itself, Sunnyside was an everchanging landscape from its heady opening days in the early 1920s to its final sad demolition in the 1950s. The book captures the spirit of the best of times a magical era which can only be recaptured in memory and photographs. It also presents the reality of a newer Toronto where change, although necessary, is sometimes regrettable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, great find!, Oct 1 2009

This review is from: I Remember Sunnyside (Paperback)
This was a most enjoyable, fast read - reminding me of some of the history I knew, and filling in many more blanks - lots of surprises. I spend a great deal of time at the current Sunnyside, and this has really enriched my experience. My parents met at the Palace Pier Dance hall, and I didn't know the evolved history of the area. I am so pleasantly surprised that we may be returning to some of the old pasttimes at Sunnyside - shown in the book, as they have this year reopened a swimming beach with purification of the water.

5.0 out of 5 stars Toronto landmark remembered, Sep 29 2009

This review is from: I Remember Sunnyside (Paperback)
This is a book about a landmark area in Toronto that has special meaning in my family. Sunnyside is where my parents met and spent many happy times. It was just a beach by the time I knew of it so it was fascinating to learn all about it and wish I had known it during its hayday. Mike Filey is a master historian and this book proves it.

5.0 out of 5 stars History and Heritage, Sep 8 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: I Remember Sunnyside (Paperback)
If heritage is also part of your interest in Toronto's history, then Mike Filey's books are a great place to start. This book for me, has great significance, since I found a picture that actually relates to my great grandmother. It is a stepping stone helping me follow my family heritage.
I look forward to owning other titles by Mike Filey, as I was born in Toronto.
