A great look at TRUE greatness March 2 2010
By Brian Proffit - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Don't let the King James-sounding title convince you this is a book stuck in the past. Michael Holmes brings a great deal of personal passion to a subject that has filled people's minds for as long as there have been humans: what is greatness, and how can I achieve and maintain it?

Holmes begins by making the point that true greatness does not come from control of others. "True greatness is not becoming great at the expense of others but rather at the expense of self; finding ways to serve the needs of people and make them better." In fact he says explicitly that greatness involves self-sacrifice.

He says there are two kinds of greatness. Quantitative greatness is made up of the external appearance of greatness through things like money, prestige, and power. Qualitative greatness is made up of internal attributes like (the familiar sounding) love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. He doesn't discount quantitative greatness. In fact, he says it's commendable for a person to aspire to both kinds. However he stresses that someone with external greatness only is really a broken person, and that God cares about internal greatness. But if you nurture internal greatness, God may well bless you with both.

Holmes does a good job of using illustrations, ranging from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer to the president of Def Jam Records. Like nearly all self-published books, I Shall Raise Thee Up could have benefited greatly from a professional editor's touch. But unlike many self-published books, Holmes' work is worth the trouble. Because of the prosperity teachings around us, it seems so many books these days work hard to either support the prosperity "gospel" or refute it. Holmes does an excellent job of walking that line, showing that the world's definition of prosperity isn't necessarily a bad thing but also isn't what should be our main desire. The best way to discover true prosperity/greatness is to focus on developing our character so we're better able to serve others, and leave quantitative blessings in the hand of God.

I Shall Raise Thee Up By Michael Holmes March 10 2010
By Dan Black - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I have read many leadership, business, and inspirational books; but "I Shall Raise Thee Up" is one of a kind. It provided me with new principles and thoughts on being a great person and leader. Michael Holmes uses stories, life examples, and the word of God to share timeless principles. He talks about what greatness is and the kind of character it takes to be great. Some of the laws he talks about include: The Law of Vision, The Law of Persistence, and The Law of Stewardship.

One of the many thoughts I took away from this book was when Michael said," We tend to become like whatever we view or study for a length of time. To see better is to become better, to see more is to become more, and to see greater is to become greater" (Chapter on the Law of Vision). I believe the power of that statement. Where you will be in five years will be determined by the books you read and the people you're around. So to be great or successful we need to "view or study" on the things that will allow us to accomplish great things for God.

In the Law of Stewardship Michael Says, "Before anyone is entrusted with big things they're first tested with small things." We can see this law at work throughout the bible and history. God always starts small and then goes from there. What God gives he expects much in return.

This is a book you will want to read with a highlighter or pen. I already have and will continue to recommend this book to others. This is a must read for every Christian and business leader.

I Shall Raise Thee Up by Michael Holmes March 20 2010
By Michael Gonzalez - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I Shall Raise Thee Up, is a necessary read for all. It speaks to all people regardless of intellect, cultural, class, or background. Mr. Holmes speaks to all of us within practical everyday terms of the adversities we all face in our walk through, what we call life on this planet.

Relevant to our times, Mr. Holmes offers five time-tested and proven Biblical principles for dealing with and overcoming the adversities we all face. Whether on the job or at home, whether we are poor or rich in material things, poor or rich in our faith, whether we are someone of stature or not as the world defines, this book will speak volumes to you. Mr. Holmes shows us where exactly to put our attention to attain a life not only fulfilling to us personally but beneficial to all whom we meet and interact with in our daily lives.

As a prolific reader, this is the first book that I have read in thirty years that has managed to "be all things to all people" without compromising the message of Jesus Christ. This is in direct line of "Saul of Tarsus" who became "Paul the Apostle" who was all things to all people without ever compromising the message of the Gospel of Truth.

If you are not a reader, purchase and download the audio. Well articulated by Mr. Holmes, you will find what you need to get you going in the right direction for your life. Whether you are a believer in Jesus Christ, a non-believer, or a follower of some other faith, this book will most definitely impact your life for the better.

I Shall Raise Thee Up - Powerful Insights March 15 2010
By Harry Tucker - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I recommend "I Shall Raise Thee Up" to anyone wondering how the wisdom of Scripture can be applied to the complexities of life in the 21st century. With captivating stories, engaging discussion questions and powerful use of quotes from Scripture, Mr. Holmes shows us how the wisdom of Scripture is truly timeless. If you are seeking insight into how Scripture can help you become more engaged in life personally and professionally, then I recommend you read this book.

One of the reasons I found the book to be so engaging is that it has just the right balance of quotes from enlightened people, wonderful stories and anecdotes, appropriate Scriptural references and excellent analysis of how we tie all of this together to apply Scripture in our lives.

Many books get too deep or academic in their application of Scripture to real life. Others are too fluffy and the reader is left lost and wondering "I still don't get it".

"I Shall Raise Thee Up" strikes the perfect balance between these two extremes and will resonate with many students of Scripture.

This is definitely a recommended read.
