Product Description

At the top of the world there is a job like no other. A job to die for. Meet Hugh, Rick, Alex, Jay, T.J and Drew. They are ICE ROAD TRUCKERS. Just 28 inches of frozen water, years of experience and quick reflexes separate them from doom. The draw: a year's worth of salary and bragging rights in just two months. The risks: breakdown, whiteout, subzero temperatures, submersion in a frozen lake. In short, death. In Canada's far North, $40 billion worth of gold and diamonds waits to be extracted from three jackpot mines. Critical equipment and supplies get to these Northwest Territories sites only one way: a 350-mile-long highway across permafrost and frozen lakes. As 26-year veteran Alex Debogorski puts it, it's a "dash for cash," with each trucker racking up as many runs as possible - at up to $2000 per trip - in the eight short weeks before the ice highway melts. Along the way they contend with the most treacherous conditions Nature can throw at them while hauling tons of precious cargo. The truckers that brave this hazardous road form a charismatic and rag-tag fraternity. This mind-blowing series takes you through an entire perilous ice road season: from the construction of this massive frozen highway to the arrival and preparation of the truck fleet; from the first enthusiastic runs to the risky final days when the highway grows unreliable; from deep-winter breakdowns to isolation and boredom on the road. ICE ROAD TRUCKERS puts you in the driver's seat. Shot with 26 high-definition cameras in deepest winter, when saner people head South or stay indoors, this groundbreaking series depicts the rigors and risks of a previously unknown way of life. THE HISTORY CHANNEL® crew itself braved every extreme, subjecting their equipment and bodies to months of exposure, to capture the personalities and dangers of this frigid world. Climb in the cab, ride along and just try to stay alive with THE ICE ROAD TRUCKERS.

Product Description

It s one of the most perilous roads in the world, a strip of ice built on frozen lakes that connects remote billion-dollar mining outposts in northern Canada with civilization 350 miles away. In the brief two months a year that the road is passable, ten thousand loads, some weighing as much as twenty-two tons, will travel over the highway in an urgent race to provide critical supplies to the camps before the ice melts.

ICE ROAD TRUCKERS follows the competition and camaraderie of six truckers over a season on the ice road, as they brave white-outs, thin ice, and the deadly cold to perform one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. From the construction of this massive frozen highway and the preparation of the truck fleet, to the risky final days when the melting highway grows dangerously unreliable, THE HISTORY CHANNEL takes viewers on a thrilling, adrenaline-pumping ride.

DVD Features: Ice Road Truckers episode of Dangerous Missions; 5 Featurettes: Meet the Truckers , Overcoming the Challenges , Perils of the Ice Road , Behind-The-Scenes , The Countdown

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must See For All Who Like Challenges Jan 19 2008
By Ian Gordon Malcomson HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
Five Good Reason for Watching This Film
"Ice Road Truckers" (History Channel)
1. The film maker has created this monumental documentary (5-6 hrs) around a competition that big-rig truckers have every winter to see who can make the most runs along the ice roads to the diamond mines in the Canadian Arctic.
2. Even if you have no interest in trucking, you will be mesmerized by the harrowing ride these men and women go through each day for two months to win the honor of being the best driver. This race truly comes across as an extreme sport, with all kinds of dangers lurking around the next corner.
3. The film provides a lot of technical knowledge as to the building of the road, the daily testing of the ice, and the maintenance of the rigs. You, the viewer, get to go along as many problems are being investigated and repaired.
4. The film does a credible job on developing character profiles for each of the main competitors in this group. The viewer gets to see and feel both strong senses of rivalry and camaraderie that forms between them.
5. The film captures a lot of very impressive footage of the great Canadian outdoors in winter. Lots of scenes where the drivers have to drive through snowstorms, do repairs in -40 F, cross frozen lakes in their rigs as the ice cracks underneath them, and drive across frozen wastelands under the undulating canopy of the Northern Lights.

4.0 out of 5 stars Working man's drama Dec 12 2010

A very well done documentary-style series covering those who drive long haul over the dangerous ice roads. The drivers themselves are interesting people, and there are even some cast in the villain role.

5.0 out of 5 stars Working Class Heroes Aug 22 2007
By Just Looking - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
For me, the greatest thing in science fiction is the positive portrayal of working class folks. Here they are in real life, in a very well-done series.

The truckers are really good guys, and their forays onto the ice roads are true adventures. The videographers share the danger, and the ups and downs of the 2-months when the lakes are frozen and the trucks try to get everything to the Canadian diamond mines before the ice melts again.

I think it's a nice touch that they put the most unassuming character on the cover!

5.0 out of 5 stars what else has been done to this series? Jan 2 2008
By bunnielover - Published on Amazon.com

I really got into this show. I wanted to know how everyone turned out, and that they all were safe in the end. One thing that really bugs me, is the bleeping of the swear words. Just like Ramsey's Kitchen shows. This is the man and this is how he talks. These are plain, rough, hard working guys and this is how they talk to each other and probably around their homes, unless the "little Woman" puts a clamp on them. Let it go, or at least on the dvd's an uncut/ uncensored version should be offered. Just like Rap music, they would probably find the uncut/uncensored would sell tons more that the annoyingly bleeped version. If it is bleeped, I won't be buying it. sorry folks. Some of the guys say they are being reconized down here in the lower 48, but this show hasn't been shown yet in Canada, so they are not reconized yet in their own stomping grounds. A way better live show than bogus Survivor... This is Really for Real. A+++

Ice Road Truckers is a daring delight. I watched this show with my son, who is also a trucker. Much to our surprise, this show was absolutely spell bounding.
