This is a great book, there is plenty of practical applications, but don't bother purchasing it if you aren't interested in getting down to business and working things out - it's not a "reading" book it's a "doing" book.

With 30+ years as a full time professional artist, with the last 15 promoting and selling my own and my husband's work, I have to say that this is the most thorough, comprehensive, timely resource I have read. Wish I'd bought it when I first heard about Alyson, but glad I have it now, as it moves me to action every time I pick it up - if there had been a book like this when I started out to be an artist in the late 70"s, it might be in its tenth revision (things have changed so much!) but it would still be my most valuable business resource!

Where has this book been all my life? Although I have two art degrees, none prepared me for the working world. This book is of immense help to all artists who want to implement an easy to use system for marketing work, keeping in touch with collectors and having an on-line presence. The book is readable, easy to follow and use. The recent edition is updated with helpful information on blogging, using Facebook and Twitter. Buy this book.

I am getting so much out of this book. As an artist starting at the bottom, Alyson's book has been invaluable in laying down the necessities for establishing art as business. The book gives real-world practical advice for putting yourself out there and getting your work into the hands of buyers. I have saved what would have likely been countless hours of wasted effort trying to figure out what is revealed here in an easy to read format. I'm glad Alyson took the time to write all this stuff down and offered to share it with the rest of the world!

Not sure about all the raving reviews for this book. I did not really read anything new or earth shattering about marketing for art here. Pretty standard marketing advice....chapter to chapter. Artist statements, portfolios, resumes, business cards, websites. etc, etc. Unfortunately there's a million books giving advice on selling and marketing art.....none of which offer up anything substantially different than each other. This one is sadly no different.

There was even a chapter devoted to getting organized and reducing clutter.......come on, give me a break! Really did not need this from a patronizing author.
Honestly.....I glossed thru the book while on a plane and am re-selling it.

I'm still reading but will read over and over I'm sure. I'm using it as a work book, hi-lighting info and marking what I need to do, which is a lot. Love her style of writing and find it easy to do the things she suggests. Just good business sense that sometimes I just don't think about, her advice is like having a favorite teacher meeting with you telling you all the important facts you need. Love that her website coincides with the book.
