A Prog Masterpiece that yearns for repeated listens, April 10 2010
By Kenny Roy "Kenny Roy" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Id (Audio CD)
Veil of Maya's "The Common Man's Collapse" was a rarity in the field of technical deathmetal or Deathcore or whatever the genre has progressed to now. No Riff over used, no fill without precisely calculated purpose, the band made a progressive name for itself and earned a great deal of respect.
This album has completed the same task without sounding the same as its predecessor. (Id) is packed with a more raw sound, yet still comes across as having been soundly produced. The licks, chops, and non-saturating/ technically refreshing breakdowns create a cerebral experience for the ages.
The album has 3 short breakdown pieces (similar to Common man's) that work very well. They are well placed and are not without atmospheric progressive ambiance behind them. The rest of the full length songs (which are all short and sweet mind you) are gorgeous works of prog death brilliance.
Unbreakable has fierce riffing and fantastically uplifting lyrics.
The Dark Passenger has unparalleled guitar work, incorporating sensually executed harmonics into blisteringly fast breakdowns and riffs.
The Higler and Resistance are nicely touched with synths and a unique structure setting them apart from the rest
Mowgli and Namaste are without doubt highlights of the album that bring progressive Death metal a new name. Both Tracks feature some of the nastiest yet unique riffs to be heard on any records.
Conquer and Codex end the album with a classic Veil of Maya sound (Codex sounds very similar to It's Not safe to swim today in some sections)
The end product's first impression is epic. Upon Further listens its clear to see that this album will not be lost among the piles of generic sounds that find their way to the surface today in metal. It stands out and begs to be listened to again and again. Saying that it's better than The common man's collapse is difficult as that record was equally respectable in its own respect and i personally enjoyed the sound on that album even a little better, however this record stands in it's own league in the world of Technical Death metal and in the world of Prog.

Smooth Release Yet Slightly Different Approach From VOM., April 12 2010
By C. Horne - Published on Amazon.com
First things first, if you liked the random and somewhat abnormal song structure of The Common's Man Collapse then you might be a bit disappointed if you come here expecting more of the same. VOM has clearly moved their music on a slightly different direction. Is this a bad thing? In my humble opinion not at all. While I loved the somewhat awkward song structure of the last two albums, I can clearly see these guys have really worked on their sound and certainly gotten better.
Combine the usual sounds you would expect form VOM along with their ability to be unpredictable and mix in a little more "smooooth" and you have this album. While The Common Man's Collapse was more like a great set of 10 tracks(and I do mean great cause I'm still listening), [id] has something of a better flow from one song to the next.
There are songs here that are a little more atmospheric than what you got on TCMC and it definitely gives the album it's own unique flavor. Mowgli, Namaste and Resistance are perhaps my three favorite tracks. But, just like the first two albums I again have another from VOM that I can enjoy from start to finish.
It's still VOM for sure. Just VOM evolved. If they keep progressing like this they should build quite a reputation for themselves. Chicago scores again!

Way to short, July 5 2010

The music is okay, but I gave it 3 stars for the fact that the album was only twenty some minutes long. Not worth paying full price. Definitely find a used copy if your going to buy it or just a really cheap one. You will be disappointed if you pay full price for this.
