Product Description

Product Description

2012 release, the first album in seven years from the acclaimed songstress. Recording of the album began casually and quietly in 2008 and Fiona kept the recording process secret from her fans and her label. Surprisingly enough, Epic Records were unaware that she was recording an album until she handed the finished product to them. The album was co-produced by her touring drummer, Charley Drayton.

Wow, Fiona? ! I used to be such a big fan and this album was a real disappointment. If anything, I have to thank it, for it inspired me to go out and make any kind of music myself because it's bound to be better than this. She sounds like she's in a pained place. Too bad for all of us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it so much I bought it twice Jun 25 2012

This review is merely preaching to the converted as, if you are a Fiona Apple fan you already know that this album is probably her very best. Stripped down and laid bare, this is probably the most vulnerable album by Fiona Apple to date. The polish of Extraordinary Machine is replaced by simple percussion and raw vocals as the record company has finally realized that the best way to sell albums is to just let Fiona be Fiona. The critical reviews have been stellar. I pre-ordered this special edition of the album, but then also like the convenience of having a digital LP version of it on iTunes. There are very few artists I will do this for. But it is worth it if it sends a message that we want more of this caliber music coming from Fiona and other artists such as herself. Definitely a quality album that you will get a lot of listening out of.

If you like the CD title (good for you) you may really like this disc (and you closely follow critics' opinions and hype).
"The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do" is serious, self-absorbed music that appeals on a few levels -- very talented singer, dramatic song structures, delicate instrumentation; all indicative of why this is a critics' pick -- but ultimately is too inaccessible and tangental to connect with... except some angst ridden teens and women.

I think she needs to spend less time crafting music and more time performing... "less is more" including less angst.
