This review is from: If I Stay (Hardcover)
Mia has a lot to love in life. She is a cellist who could be on her way to Julliard. She has a wonderful, loving, and supportive family. And she has a boyfriend who is perfect. But as wonderful as Mia's life is, she has choices to make. Should she go to Julliard and leave everyone behind? When a terrible accident occurs, Mia suddenly finds herself with only one choice left - should she stay? This book is just WOW! Do not read this in public because this one will bring tears to your eyes - I'm warning you! That doesn't mean it doesn't have humor though, because there were many times I found myself laughing out loud. This is an intense story that will not only appeal to teens, but have a lot of crossover adult appeal, as well. Gayle Forman does an excellent job going from Mia's present to Mia's past and drawing the reader in so they truly understand her love for the cello, her family, and Adam, her boyfriend. As I was reading, I felt like I really got to know Mia and her family and found myself grieving along with Mia - the writing is just that powerful. IF I STAY is a short read, but it packs so much in and I wanted to savor every moment. At times I found myself reading slower and drinking in the words because I didn't want the story to end. The story centers around music: Mia with her cello, Adam with his band, and Mia's dad being a drummer, and Gayle Forman's writing felt lyrical. She was able to capture music and put it into a book. I don't know how to describe it, but it was like I was reading a song - hopefully that makes sense! Music is such an important part of the book, Gayle Forman has included a playlist for the book on her website. I loved checking out the songs that went along with the story and listening to them when Mia did. IF I STAY is a must-read. The themes of love, loss, grief, and hope are so powerful and beautifully written that this story will stay with you long after you finish the last page. From my blog, 'Reading in Winter'***MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS*** This was an interesting book. I can't remember what made me pick it up in the bookstore (OK, I lie ' the comment that fans of Twilight would love this book pretty much sold me), but I'm happy I did. Gayle Forman''s If I Stay was emotional, touching, and wrenched the heartstrings ' not something I've been getting in my latest reads of vampire fiction and chick lit. If I Stay begins with a car crash in which Mia''s mother and father and little brother, Teddy, are killed. Mia is in a coma, but her spirit is sticking around. Through the course of a day the reader enters the life of Mia, before the accident. We learn of her relationship with her parents, her friends, her one love Adam, and the ups and downs that have happened thus far in her life. Interspersed with the past is the now - the 24 hours at the hospital. Mia watches as her remaining family and friends visit her, giving her well wishes and telling her to choose whether she will stay or go. While the majority of the book focuses more on Mia''s life rather than her choice, in the final pages Mia is thrown into a decision ' do I come back? Or do I leave? I''m not sure it''s something that many people think about'-actually having a choice-'but it's something that Mia has to deal with for one day. The ending is kind of silly ' coming back for love -' but there is one line in the story that really got to me. Mia, having lost her parents and her little brother in the crash, is listening to one of her many visitors talk to her as she lays in the hospital bed and is told that she still has a family. Death might be a touchy subject for some, but this sometimes-lighthearted, sometimes-heavy read makes sure to not make it the only focal point. It makes the reader realize that no matter what happens in life, there''s [usually] always someone there for you, whether it''s a friend or a distant relative. It''s easy to say you have nothing when something so horrible happens and sometimes it takes a miracle to pull you back to reality'the reality that the word 'family' is sometimes extended past the people you''re related to by blood, to the people you never thought would be there to care.

[...]What can I say about this book. I can't believe I have been putting this book aside for so long. It's one of those books that will stay with you. I don't read contemporary books that much so I was little hesitant at first. When I first read the synopsis I had no idea what was waiting for me during those first pages. Mia has an out-of-her-body experience and watches herself as doctors try to do everything they can to save her body. She had an accident and now she gets to see everything that happens around her even if her body is in coma. Being in this position is confusing but not as confusing as it is when she faces a choice of whether to live or stay. Mia has a lovely family and even lovelier boyfriend Adam. Adam plays a huge role in this book. Thinking of the book and wanting to say more about it I realize that I have to be very careful not to spoil anything. It's one of those books that you'll have to read to find out what it means to you. The book deals with loss, grief, loving and letting go. Music plays a central role in this book as Mia and her family and even her boyfriend are musicians or lovers of music. Gayle Forman captured me with her beautiful writing. As Mia faces the new reality of her life the author gives us a glimpse at her life before the accident. We get to know how she met Adam, know her parents and of course her love for the celo. This book is very emotional and deals with different kinds of emotions. Did I cry? Yes. Not throughout the entire book but there were certain parts that I just couldn't not to. The whole time reading this book I felt sad about what was happening. Saying that this book is awesome feels wrong somehow due to the dept this book has and what it deals with. It's one those books that will stay with you for a long time after you're read it. If I Stay was kept in my mind for days after I read it and couldn't read another book because I wasn't ready to let it go. I would tell anyone who loves books to read this. I even got my mom interested in it, when she learned what was this book about, and she doesn't even read to begin with.
