Review

"A wondrous debut. Pamela Labud weaves a delightful tale full of action, betrayal, magic and the power of love"

Product Description

The son of an English lord and Gypsy princess, Tristan Deveraux has made his gift of telepathy bearable by helping wounded soldiers on the battlefields of Spain. But his commanding officer suspects Tristan's ability, and forces him to escort a brilliant scientist and his niece back to England. With her uncle's life in danger, Emily Durbin is shocked by the small company of men assigned to them, especially the handsome, enigmatic surgeon's apprentice who seems to read her every thought - and invades her dreams with promises of a passion stronger than she has ever known...But someone is desperate to kill the scientist and possess Emily at all costs. With an enemy in their midst, Tristan and Emily embark on a perilous journey home, and an even more dangerous one into the deepest reaches of the mind - and heart...

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a good story, May 12 2008
By Melissa - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: If You Could Read My Mind (Mass Market Paperback)
Hero Tristan's background is pitiful. He is the illegitimate son of a nobleman and a gypsy and he saw his father kill his mother. Tristan, though, can read minds. His father's brother used him to read minds as a child to gain advantages in business. To escape this horrendous situation Tristan ran way and joined the army to work as a surgeon's assistant. He focuses on the pain of the wounded and dying so he can escape his own past and his mind is fully engaged in helping soldiers rather than hearing the cacophony of voices.

Emily Durbin has been told that Tristan can help protect her uncle from harm as he works on secret weaponry for the army. She is less than pleased with Tristan when they first meet but right from the start she feels an emotional connection with him.

Also guarding Emily is an army Officer. Tom also feels connected to Emily. And the other man in love with Emily is her Uncle's nefarious slimy partner. Emily is just so lovely, I guess, that everyone is smitten.

This entourage must make its way back to England so Emily's uncle can finish his project, but on their journey, there are attempts on his life. During this perilous time Tristan and Emily begin a romance. However, Tristan feels he can never really share his life and rejects Emily who in all her wisdom decides to just marry Officer Tom. She knows she does not love him but he seems honorable enough.

This book was not well plotted and the coincidences and cast of characters just kept growing. Implausibly Tristan, who can read Emily's mind all the time and about everyone else's, cannot read the traitor's mind and furthermore cannot figure out his identity even though it is incredibly obvious, but he along with everyone else has a blind eye to the problems around them.

I never could understand why everyone was in love with Emily. She had an annoying habit of believing she knew what was best for everyone else, including betraying Tristan's trust. He forgives her fairly easily for this. She was almost criminally stupid at times. Tristan is self sacrificing to the point of martyrdom and his decisions make no sense.

Lastly, I am uncertain as to the first review written about this novel. I am pretty sure, the reviewer accidentally put the review with the wrong novel; there is no Lady Halverson nor ship captain starring in this story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ghostly Love Story, May 1 2006
By Hyacinth "slow reader" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: If You Could Read My Mind (Mass Market Paperback)
Great first book! Lady Halverson communicates with ghosts. When a ship's Captain is wrongly executed, he turns to the beautiful and wealthy heiress for help. Turns out, the man who wronged the Captain and the scoundrel trying to get Lady Halverson to marry him are one and the same.
This haunting story takes the reader on an enchanted journey through love, loss and retribution. This reader loved it.
