A CRY IN THE WOODS

The scream Lena Riddle hears in the woods behind her house is enough to curdle her blood—she has no doubt that a woman is in real danger. Unfortunately, with no physical evidence, the local law officers in small-town Ash, Kentucky, dismiss her claim. But Lena knows what she heard—and it leaves her filled with fear and frustration.

Ezra King is on leave from the state police, but he can’t escape the guilty memories that haunt his dreams. When he sees Lena, he is immediately drawn to her. He aches to touch her—to be touched by her—but is he too burdened by his tragic past to get close? When Ezra hears her story of an unknown woman’s screams, his instincts tell him that Lena’s life is also at risk—and his desire to protect her is as fierce as his need to possess her.

4.0 out of 5 stars Clifhanger Ending to This Rom Suspense Dec 7 2012
By J. Legacy TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Here's another book in which the heroine has a disability. It's the 3rd book I've read in the last several where the heroine has a physical or health related handicap. In If You Hear Her, Lena is blind which I found very different and unusual and was quite interested to see how her disability would play out within the story.

Walker portrayed Lena as an independent woman, holding down a job as a chef at an Inn no less and living her life as if she wasn't handicapped at all. I was impressed with Lena's attitude and her abilities. Of course she has a trusty sidekick in her guide dog Puck - whom I loved. And a new man heating up her love life Ezra King.

Ezra King is a state cop on disability leave, trying to recover after being shot and betrayed by a partner and a lover. Lots of baggage, guilt and nightmares there.

Ezra and Lena make a connection from their first meeting, but it's not all smooth sailing when he gets a case of cold feet when he thinks his feelings for Lena may be spiralling out of control a bit fast.

In If You Hear Her we know that someone in the town is killing people, we just don't know why, other than he's messed up and we really have no idea who it is. Walker has done a masterful job of keeping us guessing and keeping the killer's identity under wraps. I have my guess, but until I read books 2 and 3 in the series I won't know if I'm right or not.

I did try to get the info out of Puck...because we all know - he knows who the killer is based on several of his reactions throughout the story. I tried to bribe him with doggie treats - but he was keeping those doggy lips zipped tight.

Rounding out the cast is Law Reilly - one of Lena's closest friends in town and a suspect for a time and his childhood friend and battered wife Hope. These two look like they are the main characters in the next two books coming in 2012.

If you don't like the cliff-hanger ending plot devise used by a lot of authors, then you might want to wait til the other books in this series are released before you start reading If You Hear Her because you aren't going to get a resolution to the investigation in this book. I bet we don't get it until book 3.

4.0 out of 5 stars What a cliffhanger Oct 30 2011

If it was the authors intent to get you so invested in all the characters and then leave you hanging until January dying to know what happens next then she succeeded. The end of this book has so many cliffhangers.

As this was the first book in the series its a little slow going at first as we get to meet the characters. Actually the first character we get to meet is the killer and his victim. We do not get to find out who the killer is in this book. I dont even had a guess yet as to who the killer is.

Lena is the main heroine of this book. She is blind and a chef. She hears a woman screaming in the middle of the night but when she goes to the police they dont believe her.

Ezra is our main hero and he is in Ash on leave from the police dept after being shot and finding out his female partner and lover was dirty. He is in the police station when Lena comes in and he decides he is going to help her.

Their love story wasnt full of conflict or back on forth - its was a steady flow through out the book.

We also meet and get POVs from Remy Jennings who is the DA in Ash (he is the hero in the second book). Then we have Hope (heroine of 2nd book) who comes to Ash at the request of her best friend Law Reilly (who is also Lena's best friend) who is a suspense author (and hero of the 3rd book). Hope was severely abused by her ex husband who is a cop and she is not the most mentally stable person due to this. We do briefly at the end of this book get to meet Nia (the heroine of the 3rd book)

IMO - there really isnt a way to talk about this book without giving away the plot points of the book which I think the reader needs to experience for themselves.

I am not happy I have to wait until January for Remy and Hope's book {{wink}}

4.0 out of 5 stars Great story, per usual for Walker Oct 29 2011

IF YOU HEAR HER, by Shiloh Walker, is the phenomenal kick-off to a great adult suspense series. I will read anything that Walker writes because her characters and plots are flawless and thought-provoking. In her newest trilogy she creates a spine-tingling thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. And as always, her love scenes and romantic chemistry is steaming hot!

This book starts off the Ash Trilogy with a bang. Lena, a blind chef, and Ezra, a detective on medical leave, team up to investigate after Lena hears screams in the night. They have an immediate connection that runs deep emotionally and physically and is undoubtedly electric. I really loved the dynamic between Lena and Ezra. Ezra has a troubled past that keeps him secluded in Ash, Kentucky, but when he spots the gorgeous Lena his heart begins to beat again. It was interesting to have a blind character as one of the MC's. I was interested to see how Walker would handle that but as usually she was flawless. Walker's descriptions of Lena's life without sight was definitely unique. Lena is a strong woman and her adaptability shows her willfulness and courage to live her own life on her terms. And the love scenes between Lena and Ezra were definitely passionate and steamy!

Along with the main story, Walker included many of the other townspeople in this story. I read the summaries for the rest of the series and the characters introduced in this book will definitely be back for books two and three. Right off the bat I was a little confused with the introduction of many characters but eventually they all wove together in my mind as the story took shape.

The suspense in the story was definitely heart-pounding. The 'bad guy' is a nasty dude and reading his scenes and what he did to women made me really hate him. As I always say, if an author can make me loathe a character then he/she has done his/her job in my mind!

Overall, great book and great introduction to a series that I will be placing high on my list of books to read this coming year. Fans of Walker will love it and if you haven't experienced this awesome author yet, this series will surely get you hooked!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the SW I'm used to Nov 24 2011

Others have done a great job of summarizing the plot so I'll just offer my opinion, for what it's worth...

I like Shiloh Walker's work, usuallly.

For the first time I'm having trouble making myself finish one of her stories. I've actually bought and read 8 other books, from other authors, in-between trying to read this one. It simply doesn't hold my interest. The character's themelves are interesting, the storyline is great, so what's the problem?

I feel like a pinball as the author knocks me from peg to peg as she shifts to differing P'sOV. While all the points of view are elemental to the story, I'm just getting involved with one (or two) of the characters and it suddenly shifts. It's almost as though Walker was trying TOO hard. I've found myself paging through the 'bad guys' POV as well as those of a few minor characters just to get back to Lena and Ezra. In other words, I've read less than 1/2 the book, as I've skimmed only enough to fill in the pertinent details. I'm aware that the rest of the story is set up for the rest of the series but I feel it really detracts from what could have been an emotional and personal growth journey of the leads.

I have the next 2 of this series on pre-order but am wondering if there is a way to cancel them. Anyone know?
