About the Author
Marianne van Vuuren read biochemistry at the University of Copenhagen, and subsequently spent several years in South America. During this stay, she became interested in the history of tribal textiles, becoming both a weaver and teacher of traditional weaving herself. During the last eight years the author has visited the Tanimbar islands regularly in order to advise cooperatives of Tanimbar weavers and continue her textile research. The Tanimbar Islands are an archipelago lying between Sulawesi and the island of New Guinea.
