Product Description

John Ike, Thomas Kligerman, and Joel Barkley speak architectural languages of the past with a sure command of grammar and syntax and a rich vocabulary of form and detail. As designers they build upon what went before to extend the trajectory of architecture.
—Robert A. M. Stern

The signature residential works of Ike Kligerman Barkley Architects bring together historic precedent and contemporary taste with a considered approach to detail, material, and craft. Based in New York and San Francisco, the firm incorporates elements from the great eras and the great practitioners of architecture: the Arts and Crafts movement, Art Deco, Modernism, Colonial Revival, Shingle Style; Sir Edwin Lutyens, Harrie T. Lindeberg, George Howe, Bernard Maybeck, and McKim, Mead & White. Yet ever present is a keen awareness of the modern world, notably in an emphasis on natural light and open views and a responsiveness to the unique qualities of a site.

The twenty-one houses and apartments in this lavishly illustrated volume, the first published on Ike Kligerman Barkley, represent the remarkable breadth of the practice. A cottage in Michigan reveals a comprehensive investigation of craft traditions, while a Hawaiian beach retreat explores the vernacular Polynesian long-house. A sleek Manhattan loft evokes the industrial history of its neighborhood, while an oceanfront villa recalls Carlo Scarpa’s interweaving of past and present. Unusual, even unlikely combinations—an English-influenced Shingle Style house the firm terms “Shinglish,” a Virginia horse farm that draws equally on classical formality and easy rusticity—embody the firm’s sophisticated balance between historic model and modern refinement.

Just as novelists and filmmakers gravitate toward genres that suit the themes they choose to explore, we look for the historic style that represents the best vehicle for the architectural story we wish to tell.
—Ike Kligerman Barkley Architects

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent design & elegance..., Jun 16 2010
By Deborah W. Cohen - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Ike Kligerman Barkley Houses (Hardcover)
If you love beauty, architectural design and evocative photography, this is a must have for your coffee table! Rarely does design on this scale reflect such style, warmth and comfort but these homes have it all. From traditional to modern, the stunning architecture and beautiful interiors are an absolute feast for the eyes. The attention to detail is striking, both interior and exterior, and insights into the concepts and motivation behind the designs were an added bonus. Countryside, Seaside, Cityside...can't even begin to pick a favorite (although I can't get the indoor pool in the Norman House on the Sound out of my mind!). Thank you for creating a book that allows us to take a peek into magnificent homes that most of us can only dream about. It inspires us to find ways to create beauty in our own homes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but..., Jun 1 2011

I bought this book because of the house on the cover. Although there are a number of equally beautiful houses in the book, don't expect them to all be of that aesthetic. There are a few interior-only, modern, urban loft projects and a Mediterranian Villa which, although beautifully conceived and beautifully presented, are not of the same ilk. That speaks to the Architects' talent, but I may not have bought the book had I had a full review of the projects within it.
To its credit, the book is nicely done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Just Another Cocktail Table Book, May 15 2010

No ordinary compilation, this book chronicles the early careers of three world class architects. Each breathtaking page juxtaposes conflicting notions of grandeur, detail and simplicity all with appropriate respect to, and use of, environs. The front cover tells the entire story while the beautifully rendered photos inside impart all of the most delicious and critical details. Few of us can ever hope to own one of these magnificant homes; however, turning each page one sees opportunity to grab perhaps one detail and impress it somehow on our daily lives. No home is even remotely similar nor actually familiar yet each somehow recalls the ghosts of classical artists Palladio, Soane and Wright. Whether a casual observer of beautiful art or a professional architect, this portfolio is worth owning.
