Too practiced, too polished... Four Josh Grobans., July 6 2006
This review is from: Il Divo (Audio CD)
I've heard a couple of selected songs on the radio ("Unbreak My Heart" in Italian I believe), and I've also been listening to the audio booths with interest of this newly found group. The thing that attracted me to them was mostly accounted for the fact that Simon Cowell was involved in the production of their release. And after seeing his high demand for quality entertainment over and over again on the one and only American Idol, I thought perhaps it was worth a good listen.
The four guys are no doubt talented in classical technique and their repertoire is interesting enough to attract both the opera lover and pop lover, but the thing that drove me away was that as I was listening, I kept envisioning in my head four Josh Grobans singing in unison together, trying to outdo one another. It made me laugh, but it also made me think about this new music industry approach to opera. Usually when you do watch an opera, say Madame Butterfly, you have the main characters singing seperately and the rest of the characters singing in unison in the background. The main characters manage to connect with the audience due to their technique, and also each show that they are worth your attention and time by their own identity. Opera is a spotlight kind of art, where like rock, the artist is upheld and put on a pedestal. When you see four guys on stage, all equally practiced and polished at the same time, it's hard to make the connection with opera personal and to take it seriously when you have a nearly manufactured group put together in the same way as your usual Backstreet Boys.
What will keep these guys successful for a while is their high class and clean sense of style when other people compare it to the dirty side of pop (think of a girl in the past named Spears). They also have developed a fan base which will recognize them for their expected quality in music.
So far, I will continue to listen to them on the radio if I hear them as they progress on through the years, but I hope that they will actually bring more change to the way they approach their genre of music instead of going the safe, manufactured routine. This is essential especially if they want to be distinguished in the pop industry.

The Gotham Hall perfomance is a must, Sep 28 2005
This review is from: Il Divo (Audio CD)
I agree with the other ladies and I would add that seeing the Gotham Hall performance is a treat. Sebastien is suppose to be the pop singer but his performance in Passera is beyond words a tone as spectacular as the three opera voices. And the video allow us the privilege of not only their voices but, the rapport/connection the guys have with each other, they read each others mind with one look and they only met a year ago. I recommand this group to one and all.

IL DIVO - Dual Disc, July 28 2005
This review is from: Il Divo (Audio CD)
I also have the cd & bought the dualdisc on the recommendations of other divas on the Official Il Divo Website forum. The extra track (Unchained Melody) is sung beautifully & would make a lovely cd on it's own. The dvd side featuring the performance at Gotham Hall is spectacular. I would recommend this to anyone who loves Il Divo & anyone who hasn't heard of them will not be disappointed with their purchase. An ideal present also for friends/relatives.
The only drawback for people in the UK is that the dualdisc does have to be played on a multi-regional dvd player, but these can be purchased quite cheaply.
