I can't quite put my finger on the reason why, but I found this recording to be rather boring. Scholl sings well, the instruments sound great, the repertoire is well chosen, but overall it just fails somehow. Scholl's earlier Handel album for Harmonia Mundi with the AAMB is one I return to often, although now that I think about it, it is usually only to listen to the orchestral pieces recording therein. Perhaps that is indicative of something... I find Scholl at his best when working under the creative direction of someone else. Left to his own devices, he falls short of creating excitement and interest, and although these cantatas are good enough, they need a little more work on the part of the performers in order for them to really sparkle. Pass on this unless you are a die-hard Scholl fan, and even then don't set your expectations very high. Instead, look forward to Fabio Bonizzoni's Handel Cantata series on Glossa.

Fans of GF Handel will want this fine recording of his early works composed in his Italian period. Handel eventually went on to become the premier dramatic composer of his day in London, but Italy was where young composers went to learn their craft and these mannered compositions show why the young Saxon took the Italian music scene by storm. As always with Handel, one catches snatches of melody that he reworked and used elsewhere.
As always, Scholl's voice sounds great. He gives us a more cerebral execution which is suitable for this music -- it is chamber music, not opera -- and although Scholl's voice is as perfect for the music as is possible in the modern era, this music is not the best vehicle for Scholl's expressive voice.
Nor is the soprano Helene Guimette the best partner for Andreas Scholl. Her voice, while fine, is overshadowed. She is a good ensemble quality soprano. She's okay singing by herself, but the duets with Scholl make me wince.

I don't share the reservations of some reviewers here. I hink that this is an extremely enjoyable collection of some of Handel's cantatas, written while he was a young man working in Italy. They are relatively small-scale works (certainly when compared to some of his larger later operas and oratorios) and have a charm and freshness which I really like. Handel's genius for writing a good tune may not have developed to its full in these works, but there are plenty of engaging melodies and inventive settings throughout and make a very enjoyable programme.
I have an old and dearly loved disc of Emma Kirkby and the Academy of Ancient Music performing some of the other Italian Cantatas (now reissued: Italian Cantatas). This disc stands very well beside it and is an excellent complement to it, which is high praise. Andreas Scholl is invariably excellent and is on fine form here. He sings with real feeling for these texts and playing of Accademia Bizantina complements him beautifully. Here they employ just seven musicians and the effect is perfect - delicate and supple but with more than enough welly when needed. The soprano Helene Guilmette joins Scholl in the cantata Il Duello Amorose and does an excellent job to my ears, bringing a lovely, light tone to her part.
This may not be Handel's greatest music but it is very good indeed, made even better by these performances. The notes are very interesting and you also get full texts and translations. It's a very good disc all round, and warmly recommended.
