Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

Scarlatti gets as close to writing an opera seria on the subject of Cain's murder of Abel as he dares in this terrific oratorio. The scene is set with careful exposition of the characters--the brothers, Adam and Eve, God and Lucifer--and then before the actual homicide, he builds up the suspense with a series of quiet, beside-the-point arias dripping with dramatic irony. And there is another masterstroke when Abel's voice appears from paradise to console his parents in an aria bursting with sunshine, effectively turning the piece into a "divine comedy" of sorts. The plum part of course is Cain's: the singer has to convey duplicity, violence, remorse, fear and tearfulness in a series of well- placed numbers. Bernarda Fink is thrilling in the part, and effortlessly employs all the many shades of her rich alto voice. Graciela Oddone is a perfect foil for her and sings the more straightforward part of Abel with a crystal-clear purity. René Jacob's vocal contribution is a little harsh sometimes, but his direction cannot be faulted. He has inspired the musicians to get right to the heart of this gripping piece. --Warwick Thompson

Excellent performances but recording engineering not best Feb 13 2004
By CM
These performances contained in this 2-disc set are remarkable. The story, of Adam, Eve, Cain, and Abel, is interesting and well written (unlike many operas and oratorios). The vocalists are simply superb. In fact, everyone involved with this project, except--in my opinion--the recording engineers, did a top-notch job. The problem that I have with the sound of the recording is that the microphones pick up a bit too much reverberation for my taste, especially in the purely orchestral sections. I guess this is a minor quibble when everything else is so right, but I just thought I would mention it in the hope of helping someone make a more informed decision.

An absolute must!!! Dec 7 2003
I bought this work merely by chance! As a matter of fact I was attracted to its cover artwork and decided to give it a try!...And, oh boy!...What a surprise, what a great discovery this has been!
The music is simply superb and the performers are all fantastic!
As usual, Jacobs is beyond reproach and each and every soloist is simply marvelous!
It's unbelievable how easy it is to fall in love with this work! I've been playing it over and over, and the more I play it the more I like it!
This album is a must for any baroque music lover!!!

Remarkable April 10 2003
Wow, - what a performance, what a work, what a discovery. This is simply stunning, from beginning to end. Marvellous arias, inventive scoring, wonderful performances of music which is everchanging in character but never dropping in quality. If you only buy one baroque disc this year, make it this set. Nothing more to say, and thats just how you'll feel at the end, right before you play it all through again.
