Illegally Iced

Jessica Beck

Donut shop owner Suzanne Hart knows how to treat her customers. But sometimes life can get a bit sticky. When a spat she has with a local blacksmith—one that could have been solved with a handshake and a mixed dozen—ends with his murder, Suzanne is caught dead in her tracks. Suddenly everyone in April Springs has their eyes on her. And they’re hungry with suspicion.

Left with little choice but to catch the killer herself, Suzanne starts lining up suspects. But her case is full of holes. How did the killer strike in the middle of the day without a single witness to the crime? Who knew that the humble blacksmith was actually an heir to a family fortune? The heat is on as Suzanne tries to solve the case and save her business. Can she have her cake-donut and eat it too?

4.0 out of 5 stars No big flaws, no big surprises Jan 5 2013

This is an average-quality entry in Beck's successful series of Donut Shop Mysteries. There's nothing terribly wrong with it, but also not a lot of sparkle or ingenuity. Some of the relationships among key characters are growing stagnant, and the credibility gaps are beginning to mount. I enjoy this series, and I enjoyed this installment, but I hope the author shakes things up a little next time around.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another fine installment. Jan 1 2013

This is another fine installment in this series. If you've read the other books in the series, you know what to expect.

In this go around, Suzanne is looking in to the death of her friend that was killed pretty much just outside the door of Donut Hearts. Suzanne and Grace are on the case for two reasons; 1) To find the killer of her friend, and 2) To clear her name. As Suzanne and Grace look into the murder of their friend, they soon learn something shocking about him, something they never wold have expected. With all of this going on, the killer is watching both of them, and just waiting to make their move.

As I've said, this is a very good addition to the series. There are several things that make this a strong read. 1) The characters are growing and developing. Mind you, not all of them are growing, but most of them are, and it keeps the reader glued to the page. One of the characters is going through a pretty interesting change. 2) The writing style. The writing style moves at a good pace, and it has a nice even flow to it. That makes it for a more entertaining read. 3) There's not a lot of fluff in this book, like there are in some cozy mysteries. 4) There are a lot of suspects that we get to pick from. It was fun trying to figure out who the killer was. Most of the time I'm wrong, and I was wrong this time too. 5) The donut recipes sound fantastic!

If you've read the past books in the series, then you know what to expect , and won't be sorry. I know I wasn't. I can't wait for the next book to come out.

Another hit for Ms Beck. The characters in this donut shop series are what make each and every one a hit. This one ended a bit abruptly. I would have liked to know a little bit more about Forrest and his mother, but altogether no real complaints.
