Book Description

Oct 6 2009 Medieval Imagination

Images in the Margins is the third in the popular Medieval Imagination series of small, affordable books drawing on manuscript illumination in the collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum and the British Library. Each volume focuses on a particular theme and provides an accessible, delightful introduction to the imagination of the medieval world.
An astonishing mix of mundane, playful, absurd, and monstrous beings are found in the borders of English, French, and Italian manuscripts from the Gothic era. Unpredictable, topical, often irreverent, like the New Yorker cartoons of today, marginalia—images drawn in the margins of manuscripts—were a source of satire, serious social observation, and amusement for medieval readers. Through enlarged, full-color details and a lively narrative, this volume brings these intimately scaled, fascinating images to a wider audience.

1.0 out of 5 stars Skinny book with little information Dec 27 2012

I knew when ordering it that this book is a part of a "for-the-uneducated-masses" series, but I expected that this might make it MORE interesting than less! From what I recall, there were about 10 illustrations in the book. Further, the illustrations broke down into only about two types!

To me, the book read like this: Illustration - explanation. Another illustration - another example of the first type of explanation . . . (going on for about 4 two-sided pages, with the illustrations taking up most of the space.) Another illustration with a slightly different explanation! Another illustration of the same thing, going on until the end of the book.

I was very busy when this book came and haven't got around to returning it yet. I hope I still can. You could get a free flyer at a museum which would give you much more information and entertainment than this book. Don't waste your money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful but short Nov 27 2011

Top notch quality in printing and definition, the quality of the book is great and the content most interesting; it's only fault is that with less than a hundred pages it falls short and leaves you wanting for more.
