2.5 stars. A mix of typical paranormal characters with a lot of fight scenes. Heavy on action, light on emotion., April 6 2009

STORY BRIEF:
Vampires and demons frequently harm or kill humans. Maya is a kick-butt cop patrolling the streets of Los Angeles. During a fight she is turned into a vampire. She now works alone and continues protecting humans by fighting and destroying these creatures. As a human she used silver bullets soaked in holy water which took care of werewolves and vampires. As a vampire she is strong enough to kill demons by using their own claws to behead them.
Adam appears to be human but has talents we learn about later in the story. His niece Cammie has been kidnapped by vampires. He hires Maya to help find Cammie and free her. A pack of werewolves attacks them and follows them on their search for Cammie.
REVIEWER'S OPINION:
This was ok as a paranormal story, but I probably wouldn't recommend it unless you're in love with the genre and like being in this world. The focus is solving the mystery and finding Cammie with a lot of action/fight scenes. The characters are standard for the genre. There was nothing unique about the dialogue. I would have liked more emotional development between Maya and Adam, other than lust. There is a touching connection between Maya and Cammie later in the story. On balance it was ok, but I wasn't surprised or delighted enough to recommend it.
DATA:
Story length: 281 pages. Swearing language: strong. Sexual language: strong. Number of sex scenes: 5. Total number of sex scene pages: 24. Setting: current day Los Angeles and Las Vegas area. Copyright: 2009. Genre: paranormal romance.
CAUTION SPOILERS:
After they save Cammie and fall in lust/love, Maya leaves Adam. Her reason is that she doesn't want to love anyone because people she loved in the past were hurt. This source of conflict is not a favorite of mine. It's too easy for authors and overused in romance novels.
We learn later in the story that Adam has a talent that can quickly and easily destroy a large number of enemies. When I saw this, I wondered why he didn't use his ability earlier, when Maya was in danger.

Action, Heat, and Vampires, April 7 2009

I love vampires and I love strong heroines and I got them both in this book. Maya Black is seriously kick-butt, and her hero, Adam, well, the guy's got secrets. (Let me just say...he's my favorite Eden shifter so far!) The chemistry between them was hot, the action blasting off the pages, and I read this book too fast!

Pulls out the stops!, Aug 28 2010

There two characters sizzle off the page. Both characters have dominant personalities and this always can lead to amazing storytelling. I won't go into the details of the plot because there's already plenty of plot summary up, but I loved the heroine of this paranormal romance. She was the perfect mix of kick-assery and just the right amount of sympathy under her hardboiled surface. Adam for me was an okay hero. For some reason I couldn't totally feel for him. Back to the reason I gave this three stars (more like three and a half), there was so much told in the novel, but I didn't FEEL the novel. Yeah there are hot, but brief, sex scenes and vows of feelings, but it wasn't enough for me. It feels as if something was left untold. I had assumed that this was just to be left for a second book, but from what I've found there isn't one. As the first to a series this novel would be a great Other World introduction but I have a feeling that 6 months and 30 books from now it's just going to be another one if "those" books that I've read where I can't recall the character or the slightly generic vampire versus the world plots...
