5.0 out of 5 stars It's a shame "Rebirth" was taken!, Nov 12 2010

2007's Immortal is the third studio album from Brazilian progressive power metal band Shaman. The band, which was formed by departing members of the original Angra lineup, has undergone a major lineup shift once more. Of the original lineup, only drummer Ricardo Confessori is on board. Most notably, vocalist Andre Matos is out, replaced by relative newcomer Thiago Bianchi (ex-Karma).

I must confess I was skeptical going into this one; so much so that I didn't order a copy until a few weeks ago. You'd think I would have known better, considering how much I loved the post-Matos Angra lineup. Sure enough, my reaction to Immortal was about the same as when I first heard Rebirth. I was blown away as soon as the instrumental intro faded and the powerful opener "Inside Chains" kicked in. This isn't a tired band kept alive by replacements. It's a vital, exciting band that's making some stunning melodic progressive power metal!

Immortal is an incredibly strong album, and one that has more in common with recent Angra albums than the previous Shaman releases. So much of Shaman's early identity relied on Andre Matos' unique vocal style, and without that the character is quite different. It helps that Bianchi is such a powerful singer in the Edu Falaschi mold. He's got great range and incredible power, which gives the songs on Immortal that same soaring epic sense that Rebirth had. The band's renewed focus on a more solidly metal sound (as opposed to the almost mainstream Reason) also helps.

Odd as it may seem, the Angra breakup of 2000 is like a gift that keeps on giving. We now have Angra continuing to make incredible albums, Edu Falaschi's Almah, Andre Matos' solo career (not to mention the upcoming Symfonia project with Timo Tolkki), and a vibrant new Shaman lineup. I have to love the Brazilian metal scene!

If you're a fan of Angra and/or Shaman's earlier albums, or just a fan of high quality melodic progressive power metal, you definitely need to check out this new Shaman lineup. Once you hear Immortal, you'll be a believer too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Brazilian Progressive Power Metal, Sep 24 2008

This is by far Shaman's best album. It's now led by the previous drummer from Angra after Andre Matos yet again got kicked out of a band (Kicked out of Angra before). Because of this there's less power metal like vocals and song structures. It resulted in an amazing piece with raw progressive power metal with many new band members including a much better vocalist. Drums are crazy like everything else in it. Overall it's a very solid album that's very well written and awesome lyrics. If you want a decent taste from Brazil for metal like Angra this is the album for you!
