Product Description

Here is something to please those Gladiator fans! Filled with vivid battle sequences and excellent historical detail, this novel from an army officer turned writer presents the "memoirs" of the Roman General Suetonius Paulinus. Sent to Wales to capture the gold mines, Paulinus faces the fury of Queen Boudicca's tribes, all united against Nero's corrupt officials. It's a tale packed with fascinating detail of life in Roman Britain and in the Legions in particular.

About the Author

George Shipway wrote half-a-dozen well received historical novels in the 1960s and early 1970s

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classical Blast from the Past, Sep 8 2010
This review is from: Imperial Governor (Paperback)
This is a re-print of an old classic, Shipway's The Imperial Governor. It is a narrative of Boudicca's revolt told by Gaius Paulinius, the Roman Governor of Britain. The story is very well told, and interesting shows the good and bad side of it's Roman narrator. For fans of Ancient history, especially early Imperial Rome, this novel is hard to beat - the battles are intense, the political maneuvering interesting and the picture painted of a newly conquered province at the edge of Empire make this a must-read. The author, who spent his youth as a Lancer officer on the Northwest Frontier of the Raj, adds considerable insight into the telling of the tale

One of the most boring books out there. I can only recommend this book as a cure for insomnia.

2.0 out of 5 stars For military enthusiasts only, April 19 2004
This review is from: Imperial Governor (Paperback)
This book covers a critical period in British and European history, with fascinating, colorful historical figures as characters. Unfortunately, the prose is dry as toast and the characters -- arguably the most important figures in British history -- remain ciphers. Because there are no notes about sources, I can't even say if the history presented is accurate. When I saw on the inside cover that it had been reprinted by a military history press, I got a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach, and that feeling was borne out as I read the book. If you already know the difference between a centurion and a legionnaire, if you care deeply about military tactics and strategy, if character development isn't a top priority ... then you may like this. If, however, you are looking for good storytelling and life-like characterizations ... then don't bother.

The definitive novel about Boudicca's revolt has yet to be written, I believe.
