I have a 13 year old. He is reading 7 Habits of highly Effective Teens. This will be next in conjunction with the workbook. I think for the right teens these types of books are helpful. Mine is very cerebral and thoughtful.

I might add that the book does not present reasons or logic. Instead, it states things and expects the reader to take it at face value and accept it without question. This is not healthy in the least; even if it seems like a good way to get someone to not engage in 'undesirable' behavior (and before concluding that behavior is undesirable, one should take a good long look at their reasons why) it only takes away basic reasoning skills until they become a mindless absorber of whatever is told to them.As a teen, I say this to parents thinking of getting this book: Do not get it. Instead, talk to them, or give them information that does not talk down and patronize them. We deserve respect, and deserve to be treated as reasoning adults. We deserve facts, logic, and evidence, not just blanket statements stemming from knee-jerk reactions. |
