This is another of the Carson Ryder series. I wouldn't read this without having read his other books first, though, because that would help to develop the relationship for the reader with the characters. As with other Carson Ryder books, this one involves a mystery to solve. Carson ends up entrenched in fighting off white supremacists and uncovering a secret that a famous family is desperate to keep hidden. While it might border on the implausible from time to time, the author develops Carson Ryder's character more fully and one sees his growth into a more mature human being in this story. That said, if this book were skipped in the series, the reader could still keep up with the story without losing much.

I have been giving the Carson Ryder and Harry Nautilus series a chance, and I want to like it, I really do, but all it really has going for it is a good set of characters. The story is based around a baby that Ryder and Nautilus find one morning while fishing outside Ryder's beachfront home. The baby, barely alive, becomes the epicenter of drama between white supremacists and the cops trying to protect her. Nothing rings true in this, except the religion. Reverend Scaler, an important figure in the evangelical world is found dead under suspicious circumstances and Ryder and Nautilus have to figure out how to untangle this mess while trying to protect the child.

I thought that Kerley's first book, The Hundredth Man, was his weakest but that was before I read this one. Nothing in this book is logical. One of the only good parts about his series are Ryder and Nautilus and he didn't even do much with them in this book except to give Ryder some "depression" issues. I would firmly recommend just skipping it altogether.
