Having proved with MTV Unplugged that they are more that just a bunch of pretty faces and that they can actually play their instruments, The Corrs returned to the studio for their third "proper" album. Owners of Unplugged will already be familiar with two of the tracks on here, "At Your Side" and "Radio", which are given the full studio treatment and endowed with a much fuller sound. Unfortunately, this is not necessarily a good thing, as the album as a whole tends to be overproduced--taking the raw folky qualities and turning them into a far more sanitised sound. The stand-out tracks, as a result, tend to be the more up-tempo ones--"Breathless" and "No More Cry"--and to be fair, when they're good, they're very, very good; but when they're bad, they're just dull. There are also some strange changes in direction--the reggae-lite of "Give It All Up" is a dramatic new sound that doesn't quite work. Unlike previous albums, In Blue doesn't seem to be quite so flowing--with several different producers working on it (including Mr. Shania Twain, "Mutt" Lange), maybe it was a case of too many cooks spoil the broth. --Mel Roberts

5.0 out of 5 stars I give it my highest rating! Jun 14 2004
By Kurt A. Johnson TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
The Corrs are an authentic Irish band, composed of three sisters and a brother, from Dundalk, Ireland. Jim Corr plays guitar and keyboard, Sharon plays the violin, Caroline plays the drums and Bodhran (frame drum), and Andrea plays the tin whistle and is the group's lead singer. Not only good looking, these young people are extremely talented, known for their unique blend of traditional Irish music and modern pop.

Their album, Forgiven Not Forgotten (a personal favorite!) has a lot of that great Irish sound, while this one leans more heavily towards the pop side! Heck, the first track is their smash hit, Breathless! I loved that song, but my favorite is Somebody For Someone, which is very nice. Sister Andrea has a great singing voice - in the tune Rain (track 12), I swear that if I close my eyes, I could imagine that it is Karen Carpenter singing (I loved the Carpenters). But, in all of the rest of the tunes, her voice is definitely her own, which is wonderful to hear.

So, if you like pop music and you like Irish music, then I would say that this CD is for you. As for me, I give it my highest rating!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not their best, but I enjoy it either way. Jun 8 2004
Format:Audio CD
Ok, so most diehard Corr fans will agree that this album probably is not their best, and TOC and FNF are better, but to be honest, I still like this album. I think some of the songs are boring, but most are decent in my opinion. And gosh, "Breathless" got them good recognition in the US! Recognition that they deserved long ago!

Song Reviews:

Breathless ~ Catchy, poppy, unique, fun. I love this one. To me, it's a classic b/c it gave they so much popularity and recognition. It's just a darn good song. Again, maybe not their best, but it's fun to sing along to.

Give Me Reason ~ This song bores me. It's not terrible, but it's one of my least favorites on the album. There's just nothing catchy about it.

Somebody For Someone ~ One of my favorites!! Here is where we see Andrea's talent in lyric writing. It's a gorgeous song and very unique. It's a beauty and I love it!

Say ~ Boring. Boring. Boring, and I must say, slightly annoying as well.

All The Love In The World ~ A nice song, but nothing to write home about. Some of the lyrics are nice, and the video is gorgeous, but it's nothing I would scream about.

Radio ~ I love this one, but I like the version from Unplugged a little better. This one is a little more...umm...I dunno...over-produced. It's a fantastic song though, Sharon wrote it, and she did a great job. Good on ya, Shaz!

Irresistable ~ Catchy for the first few times, but then its achingly annoying poppyness just gets to you. It's not very good live, either. Ack.

One Night ~ It's just boring. :( It's a pretty song, but nothing stands out, and where's the celtic influence on this one. I think if that was added in, it would be better.

All in A Day ~ This is a good song, not my favorite, but it's decent. The lyrics are very clever, and well written. It's a little slow and mellow, but if you're in the mood for that, this is a good song.

At Your Side ~ Like Radio, it's better on Unplugged, but still, this song is sooooo cute and loveable that you can't hate it. The lyrics are awesome, and it's just a beautiful song.

No More Cry ~ One of my favs, and one that Andrea is very proud of. The lyrics are brilliant, and it's a fantastic song. It's fast, and it rocks a little bit towards the middle.

Rain ~ Oh God. My least favorite Corrs song of all time. SO INCREDIBLY BORING. :( It's slow and it's boring.

Give It All Up ~ UGH! This one sounds like Andrea is singing into a tin can! WAY WAY WAY over-produced and cheesy with those trumpets or whatever. This is my 2nd least favorite Corrs song, after Rain.

Hurt Before ~ Dear God, this song is incredible. Lyrics = fantastic!!!!! It's BEAUTIFUL, and Andrea's vocals are incredible. It's a gorgeous song.

Rebel Heart ~ In my humble opinion, this song MAKES THE ALBUM. This is the instrumental that Sharon wrote in Malibu years ago, and boy oh boy oh boy is it good. It's so gorgeous and smooth and Irish. You HAVE to love it.

All in all, it's a decent album. I still love listening to it(most of it) from time to time. TOC and FNF are better, but seeing as I love The Corrs more than life itself, I'll say this is a decent one too. ;)

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful DVD-Audio production April 26 2004
Format:DVD Audio
_In Blue_ is a showcase of what a superb sound engineer can do with pop music in high-resolution multichannel surround. This impeccably produced DVD-Audio title eschews the flashy overuse of surround channels and lets the darkly seductive vocals come through clearly up front. The surrounds are used with more artistic subtlety to create a three-dimensional ambience you can't get anywhere else, including a live concert. Just put the disc on a good system, sit back, close your eyes, and you'll soon be in another world.
